I have a habit of putting it in Neutral when waiting at the lights or coasting down a hill. I suspect this has been confusing the logic and why it sometimes acts weird.

Sounds like something that would solve all the random slipping problems if resetting the logic and changing my driving habits doesn't work.
I was quoted ~$400 to service the transmission...I've done 130k+ and not sure when it was last serviced, if ever.

If you serviced it it would cost the price of auto Tran oil and some pan gaskets.

For about $100 (quote from July though...) I can get the gasket and filter from my local VW parts shop. I assume they can supply me with trans oil too, or should I get some reputable third party.

Finally getting around to fitting my rims hopefully this week, looking into some DIY fab too, just looking for the right roof racks to come along. The ones I bought on eBay after selling mine to stefcio fell through
