Looking for VR6...

sorry posted this thread twice cause i accidently put it in the mk2 forum section first!

Hey all my name is Dom ,im currently looking for a first car and the vr6 is my first choice.
Its just really hard to find one worth buying as they are so scarce ,let alone in NSW.
i have found one for the pretty good price of $7000 here are some details:
-1994 vr6
-lowered 2 inches eibach springs
-ss 2 inch extractors
-ottinger ss exhaust system from cat back
-new mass air flow sensor
-monza race seats,white dial set
-kyb gas struts on all 4 corners
-recently replaced tyres
-149000 kms

and as far as problems go the heater is not working due to a bypassed leak, the central locking is playing up and there are a few minor paint chips.

everyones opinion would be highly appreciated as well as tips and advice as to what else to consider when buying a vr6.

central locking isnt too hard to fix if u are able to work on a car yourself. It usually relates to an air leak in the lines or a failed pump.

Id be cautious of buying a car with a disconnected heater. It needs to be connected for roadworthy in vic. Im assuming it would be the same up there. And its a HUGE job to replace. If you get it done professionally you could be looking at the wrong side of $1000! So yeah. either buy with a roadworthy or cheap would be my best advice cos VR6 parts are far from cheap!

for your info, there is a red Vr6 for sale at a dealership in granville on parra rd, its going for $8,990, red, it looks untouched and immac. If you are interested i could have a closer look for you as i only work in auburn and pass it everyday.

VR6 at Granville

Hey dom,


i checked out the car for ya,

its a 1996 model, red and has 182,000kms.
The only downer i can see is that its auto. Looks completely immac, everything is original too the BBS wheels. Its 86 Parramatta Rd Granville. Price is $8990 but its been there for a while so i reckon you could beat them down, also 3 yrs warrenty.

oh and if anyone else can help i woud love to know how much approx it would cost torepair a leaking heater unit???

The VR6 is a GREAT car, but they do come with their share of common faults. The common things to break on a Mk3 are the AC, the heater, the power windows, the cruise control and the central locking.. and how could I forget the coil. And thats before you look at the running gear

The coil is about $450 and is easy enough to replace yourself.

A new heater core is about about $100, to have it installed though your looking at close to $1,000 inc parts and labour, you have to remove everything forward of the handbrake to get at the thing so it costs a fortune to get someone to do it for you. You can do it yourself if you have the time and inclination. These things are good for about 10 years, so it's either been done already or needs to be done on most cars.

The AC compressors die, they are about $400 rebuilt, don't **** round the a 2nd hand one, it's not worth the trouble.

Power windows are a simple fix although are about $250 or so per busted electric unit.

Central locking is a pain as it's an air system, if it's just the pump you may get away for a few hundred for a new pump, if it's anything else, look at getting an electric system installed as it will most likely end up much cheaper.

Cruise control... NFI, mine doesn't work, it's on the "one day" list.

To rebuild a gearbox and replace a clutch your looking at about $2,000 or so on a manual.

Hopefully that gives you some idea what it would cost if any of those parts are playing up and you can then adjust any offer accordingly.

In my case I have replace the heater core, the AC compressor and various other little bits and pieces. At the end of the day I still love the car and am still spending money fixing little things. I could have left both heater and AC undone, probably should have not bothered with the heater, but the AC is a must in Australia if you ask me. Mind you ask me about the heater again in Winter

Most VR6's are been driven hard, afterall, thats why we buy them If you wanted to putter around you'd get yourself a 2.slow

The car itself looks OK (as far as the pictures go), keep in mind the rough prives I have said for any broken parts.

If I were to sell mine now I would be asking for about $10,000 or so, but I have new AC, new heater and leather (as well as working everything except criuse working).

$9,000 seems a little rich, but then I suppose the suspension and exhaust add a little. Consider as well that with those parts on it, it has most likely been flogged extra hard
