The New VR6 - Showroom project.

I didn't even have to get a quote doing third party recovery! Just took it to a good panel shop, filled in the forms for Slater and Gordon, car got repaired and the bill got sent to the other insurance company to settle! My insurance wasn't involved at all.

Main thing is that you've come out of it ok and aren't going to lose out financially. It's just a pain for you to find a replacement car.

Sounds like you got a pretty good deal! Although I only had third party myself so it went to her insurance straight away and RACQ wanted to do the inspection etc. and wanted a quote from a smash repairer. Plus there is a story behind how I actually came out very well financially so I'm not complaining. Won't disclose that though.

It really is proving to be a pain and at this stage I'm going to have to go interstate. May be flying to Sydney next week.

Problem is that its a 6 grand job and I still need to do the timing chain... Any advice on what you would do would be appreciated but yeh it's just not practical for me at this stage. Even once it's fixed it has to go through one of those ridiculous QLD QIS inspections because its written off nad that costs a cool $450 dollars. Plus roadworthy and re registration I'd be just shy 10 grand.

VR6s are nice cars, but they aren't that nice. $10k isn't worth it IMHO.

exactly my point... If I had the skills and time I'd just potter away at it and repair it all myself but at 17 and living at home its not really possible or fair on my dad.

Just wish she hadn't hit it in the first place...

                6 grand for what ?
To replace the rear quarter panel and to put it on a chassis straightener ?
                Should be under $4k

I think the boot shell has been warped and the chassis rails are fine !
The hit on the side is above the chassis rails !
I still don't understand how youve got a hit in the bumper and one in the side, from 1 hit

Gotta remember it'll need respraying, removal of old panels, welding of new panels (all spot welds) and the QIS $450 inspection (rego, CTP and safety cert on top of that). The chassis rail has dropped about 0.5cm and could be bent back but the rail inside the boot behind the wheel arch on the right side has crumped and will need repair.

i've thought about it long and hard and I don't think it really adds up for me to do it...

Ohh and there was no hit on the side. Maybe it's just the photos that make it look like that. The rear quarter just crumpled in when she hit me.

Just picked up on this thread. Is it a common problem for the cruise control not to be working in a VR6? I've got a 98 VR6 and the cruise control does nothing. Any idea what an auto electrician will charge? I'm scared of them! You mentioned you had 2 CC ECU's available? Is that the solution? Do you still have them? Cheers, Daniel

Don't bother gettin your cruise fixed. It's costs an arm and a leg.

Hi Daniel, best to look up a thread I started a while ago. http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...rol-80270.html

With a bit of know how it just requires some soldering on the ECU as the solders actually fracture preventing it from working. There are links in that^ thread. Also do this VW Volkswagen GTI-VR6 List - Old Library - How-to: Debugging cruise control problems diagnostic to make sure its the Cruise ECU and not the vacuum system. I would be happy to fix one up for you and send it but you'd be looking at maybe $50 - $75 depending on shipping.

Its worth it! You'd be able to do it easy mate. Just takes a bit of know how.

Not for sale yet mate sorry. I have someone keen to buy the entire thing and fix it up. I know I'd get more for parting it out but I would prefer to see the car back on the road.

Brilliant. Thanks for all the info. Now for a bit of tinkering and soldering! Is there a light that comes up on the dash when it's getting power or it's on or set? I'll let you know my progress in case there's something helpful for others with the same issue.

Just another quickie, my indicators have decided to start clicking and double speed. Any ideas as to what would trigger that? My right is at double speed and the left occasionally goes into double speed but not all the time.

No light that I know of unless mine isn't working. You have to actually take it out and drive it over 35km/h then set it to test.

Indicators blinking fast is a warning I think for a blown bulb. If your's is ok I'be heard its sometimes a contact in the actual light fittings that gets grubby? You'll have to do some more research on that yourself haha.

                              ANy pictures of your VR??
