Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Gearbox selector out of sync

Got stuck in the eastlink tunnel last week. I went to change gear and I lost all drive, no gear would select.
I feared the worst but it seems that after a fiddle around it may be a problem with the gear selector and not the gearbox (thank god).
I've been able to get the gears in sort of. i was able to go for a test around the block but the gears still seem to be having a hard time grabbing the gears.

Has this happen to anyone else and how do i fix it?

    I have the 02A trasnmission.

Haynes manual says go to a VAG dealer cos there is specially machined jigs required...

    Cheers.

Is there any play in the gear stick? If so it might be the relay shaft ball = 10 mins to replace & around $30.

      I believe that's the wrong gearshift, I need 02A.

I found a vid of what mine it was doing on mine, and the same type too

but the links in the vid lead to doing a 02J swap which isn't what i need atm.

      I found the problem though.
The spline on the shifter lever and the selector shaft are worn out.

      The Part Number is: 1H0 711 053 A

But I even rang up the VW dealership (Burwin) and they couldn't even find the diagram of the 02A tower.
So i'm a bit stuck to where to find this part..

otherwise i need to find a place that can re-spline this part.
If anyone knows anything that may help, that would be great.

If you can supply them with the part number, there's no reason why they can't run a search on it to at least get a price.

To re-spline it, you'd need to close the hole up and re-bore before you can spline it. You'd have to do similar to the shaft.
