Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

      • Not much to update.
Vento had been sitting in storage for the last 12months or so.
Dragged it out to move it home, gave it a wash, and took it to a local cars and coffee meet.
Now that I can store it where I'm living I hope to get some work done on it.

        • Been a while.
Vento front went back on. New (to me) genuine Vento Vr6 lip

Got the Vento out for a track day/bucks party on the weekend (suss the photos to guess whos)
minimal prep work went into it. Oil filter, air filter, cabin filter got changed. Rear wheel, calliper and rotor came off so I could straighten out a hub thread that had caught me out last wheel change. Quick wash and a few braps/stops on some private roads to give her a shake down and clean the rotors of scum.

My trip started Thursday with a trip from the Island to Kilsyth for an alignment and pair of new tyres at Trackside
Friday Dart, Tim and I (sorry Stu) headed off via some twisties to Wangaratta.
Saturday was track time at Winton. Managed a 1:52, few things to sort on the car will certainly bring this down (see below)
Sundays drive home was long. Splitting headache/hangover, rain in some very tight and icey looking twisties, lots of highway patrol and then a defect station 20mins from home that I chose to avoid and head into the hills for an added 15min drive.
All in including the track day and hills runs I think the fuel economy was 19.6mpg on the MFA (12per100km pending what conversion you use) and 596miles (959km)

          Few things to fix
Oil temps, still and always has been an issue even when driving on roads. I have a thermoastat sandwich plate and external oil cooler to go on, very similar arrangement to what vwmotorsport used. Would see 250F (121deg C) frequently. Had a tip off that there is a thicker factory oil cooler that can be made to fit. Means I was only getting a couple of laps with heat in the tyres before needing to back off and reset.

Throttle body/accelerator pedal, something I should have fixed a while ago.
Once the car gets hot and you lift off the gas pedal for a second the pedal goes hard (assuming TB locking closed) and needs a solid stab to break free. Look like a knob at the lights, but on the track meant any time I went for hard brakes was an effort to get back on the gas coming out of the corner.
          Few ideas here:
oil from the PCV is creating a seal and holding the butterfly tight under tension
the inside of the TB is slightly scored and when everything expands its enough to grab
need to play with the TB stop to keep it slightly ajar

Brakes working much better than at PI, however I suspect the front left isnt working as well as it should has the rotor didnt clean as quickly as the drivers.

When I was really throwing it into corners felt like the steering popped or got caught lightly, need to check if this is as simple as something making contact or if there is something wrong.

Post track day the shifter doesnt want to find first when coming from reverse, its OK coming from second but I feel it doesnt want to "pop up" like it should. I have a set of DG bushes to go in and a oem short shifter too

Didn't end up putting the new tyres/wheels on as I wanted to try finish off the 10 year old RE003, so hopefully next day the NS2R get a go.
Also much happier with the 205/45/16 16x7 combo compared to the 195/55/15 15x7 combo I had at PI years ago.
Less body roll, softer offset meant I didnt need to raise the car a mile to stop rubbing, lower profile means less roll, didn't need the taller tyre of the 15s to help with gearing at Winton (might be a problem back at PI though)

BTCC look is the dream! Think I'd need some fancy suspension and bodywork to make that happen though.
I have the perfect OZ if the poor girl would take a 18x9/10 combo
