Wally dude, relax were just mucking around. To talk about your problem go get it looked at many members have had cone filters and there is no pinging!

It must be something else, go get a VAG COM scan that will do the trick!

what about the MAF? do you know how that sensor works and what information it obtains?

I doubt the pinging has anything to do with my previous problems. those problems are fixed, some many years ago.
wow,you sense hostility from a message board?Take a chill pill mate..
are you not the same person that posted all those problems with your car recently?if your car pinged even after you changed back to a panel filter, you still believe it was the pod that caused it ??
im not going to go into how a maf works, thats not what the topic is about.

maybe you should start your own thread with all the issues you have with your car instead of hijacking soundofav6 thread.

      gpk_gti out.

Haha guys, while there is no hostility, there is a bit of a condescending tone being thrown about. I informed Wally of this site when I was asking about his car; he was very helpful and honest about it all. I told him how VWW is a very friendly community and miles ahead of VWVortex when it comes to attitude towards other members. Let's cut some slack aye

Guys I think he means an alarm went off... am i right cOS?

So you put the pod on and the MAF sensor set off an alarm? was it on the dash like a light?

If i understand correctly (someone may need to correct me) the MAF sensor works in conjustion with the ECU (and sometimes an exhaust gas oxygen (EGO) sensor) to control and correct the amount of air the engine receives.

Could there be something wrong with cOS' ECU?

From my understanding there is no such thing as too much air, otherwise, turbos wouldn't work....

the pod bringing in more air could throw out the a/f ratio a bit the ecu should pick it up though, i say it could be that with timing being out that is causing the pinging, also if you are using regular unleaded it wont be helping.

A cause of pinging is due to the premature explosive combustion of fuel within the combustion chamber...

This can occur when the air carrying the fuel is very hot, which affects the flash point of the fuel, causing it to explode independently of the car's intended ignition source, while the air/fuel mix is undergoing the compression cycle...

So, technically it is possible that a cone filter sitting too close to the engine block, when becoming massively heat-soaked could cause the engine to "ping", however, keep in mind that pinging caused by an overheated air charge is a far more likely scenario on a turbocharged engine that is not properly intercooled, or an extremely high compression engine that is not receiving a cool enough air charge. So while it is possible, it is not highly probable, which may explain why it does not happen on all VR6's, it may be an isolated problem on this car magnified by poor fueling, or any number of factors that we are not privy to...

Just remember that the physics involved in car engines are many and varied, and you need to consider all things before writing something off just because you haven't heard of it happening before...

Since when did we all become expert master mechanical engineers? Share what knowledge you do have, so that all here may have a wider knowledge-base, however understand that none of us know everything there is to know, or else we wouldn't need to be here would we???

And SoundofaV6, the shape of that filter you have was designed for increased frontal air flow velocity while maintaining the highest possible surface area of filter. It is a quite efficient, as it funnels air toward the intake piping, and very effective when combined with a high velocity source of cold air (e.g. sticking it out the front of the car and doing 100km/h...)

That's to answer the question this thread was initially intended for...

              Cheers

Below is what the thread was initially inteded for, and judging below from the pic it gives it a good example!

                      there you go cOS!
John you are a bloody ripper!

cOS, you should put some kind of heat shield in between the engine block and your filter then fashion some kind of ducting system from the front vents... that can't hurt...

haha.....hey ray thanks for the reminder, I myself got off topic as well.

hey john thanks for the tech info.
Have not yet got luck finding place postion to make use of high velosity air design. Obviously I have to extend with pipes and stuff, but the position in the engine bay. the size is very clumpy.
the filter size is about "middle finger to thumb with 2 hands, and about plam size and a bit deep."
                            Anyone got suggestions?

one general question... if I was to redirect and extend the filter with a pipe some where. Would there be certain distant before I loose suction?
"just like drinking/snorting coke with a meter long straw?"

yes you are correct, the alarm goes off.

I am not sure about dash light, this was a long long time ago.

I wouldn't rule out an ECU problem. my electrics is abit wonky anyway.
