Those cheap springs on ebay says that they suit 4 Cly models only.
If you want to go low for cheap and dont really care about how it rides maybe go to pedders and get some cheapish lowering springs?

yea had noticed that, found another set of identical looking ones for vr6, but idk, sounds like a good way to **** up the shocks and would probably feel horrible to drive on. May have too see if i can get some cash togethor and just do it right the first time and go with hottunning or something.

The car can be a little "hard" to start, have to turn it over for a while and give it a bit of accelerator for it to roar to life, it then sometimes feels like its running a bit rough. It has been a bit cold so hoping this is normal for a vr6 or not a major problem, once it gets going the thing is fine. Also hear a some what loud sort of quack noise (its hard to describe) when it starts up, no idea what that is.

Congrats bro, welcome to the brotherhood of the VEE-ARGGGGH-6! lol, good to see another stolen from interstate!

Always fun building on a budget, it's when your creativity blossoms But please, as hard as it is, try stay away from china parts; I know they're cheap but you'll regret it...

If you want to go low on the cheap, get yo uncle snip snip on! :p

oh and if you haven't already, give it a major service; I did to mine after a month of ownership (back in the day) and it made a MASSIVE difference! It may also solve your lil start up issue...

It'd be nice to see you at future events if you can make it down

Yea thanks, should be a bit of fun trying to keep the thing running especially if (well when) things break, let alone paying for things i don't really need yet. Alot can be done with a can of paint, some simple tools and some imagination though

The thing was serviced about 7000km ago, but it does sound like a good idea. Not sure if there are any good people specialised in vw up here though, want to advoid the dealership. A trip down to Jmac maybe, considering from what I've read here he knows his stuff, and either next year or the year after I will be living down in brisbane anyway.

And yea will definately try to make it down to some events, would be nice to meet some other members.

edit to save double post: Thing fired up perfectly this morning, which it also did the next 3 times i had to start it. Seems to have solved its own problem

First things first, take the car for a drive and turn the cruise control on. (If you need the manual you can grab it here: http://www.mooshen.com/vwwc/golf/golf_mk3_manual.pdf ). What you want to do is set the cruise and hopefully hear the relay's ticking trying to turn it on when you hit set and off when you tap the brake. If you hear the relays ticking it's likely to something wrong with the vacuum pump or the lines (which are things that always breaks )

The cruise control is a vacuum operated system, the pump sits behind the washer bottle on the passengers side front (basically in the front guard). This vacuum does nothing more complex than pull the accelerator pedal down. The line runs into the front passenger side tunnel/frame bit then across to the pedals. The high tech way of testing it is to grab the pipe and suck on it. If you can feel pressure get someone to feel if the pedal is moving, if not, it's time to hunt down the broken pipe. The pump itself can be tested by grabbing some small alligator clamps and running some power through it to see if it pumps.

In my case I found that the vacuum pipe was cracked *just* where it exited the frame at the front of the car, which was damn lucky since I'd hate to have to try and run all new piping.

Bottom line, it's a pretty simple system and it's likely that the pump or the line is busted.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Thanks for that Hawk. When we were trying it I can't remember hearing any noise at all, but i'll have a closer listen, and try all of that.

Your welcome. For reference the system diagram looks like this:

Did a few things this week:
-Figured out the pipe for cruise control must be leaking somewhere (Thanks Hawk)
-Removed and painted the horrible "white/faded grey ft. specs of silver" badges and painted them black
                    -"Fixed" the steering column surround
-Washed the thing - like twice
-Really opened it up through an awesome windy bit of road, a couple of times >=]

Also got RWC and will get it registered to qld on monday probably. Passed RWC first try, although they mentioned my rear brake pads are down to like 2.5mm, tires need to be rotated, Slight leak from oil filter housing and right inner cv boot, and both rear strut bump stops are broken. So spose that gives me a few more things too do.

Oh and it looks like someone is more then interested in buying the car we have for sale, so hopefully this will be the last night the poor vr has to sleep outside
