Went of and looked at this instead.

And a guy reckoned there not much difference power/acceleration wise between the GL a CL? GL would have to be a bit faster with 25% more engine cc then the CL?

Acouple of other Q's to get your teeth into now that I can think off some.

VR6's have a cool window down/up function with the drivers key entry, does this trickle down to the GL's?

What excately is the problem with the windows and how much will it cost to fix for good/repair?

The Aircon is cold and warm, but didn't have much guts. Dad reckoned a regas would fix this, would he be right in the case with the aircon 'problem' with golfs?

      1) Its not 25%. Its 1.8l plays 2.0l, so about 10%
      2) Yes it does for GLs, don't know about CLs, but i'll hazard a guess they'd have it too
      3) The window regulators are prone to breaking. IIRC there's a disc made out of a polymer that wears out. Mk4s are made out of aluminium/some other metal? But aren't interchangable. Golf Loon can do you one installed for $150
      4) Possibly. The condenser in my GL is broken, and to buy a new genuine VW one is in something of the order of $2,000. Initially thought the gas had run out. It can go hot but won't blow cold air. Don't know if its a common problem though, definitely worth checking out first.

      I'm learning stuff

Also, I noted in the green one the battery doesn't have a little fabric pouch thing they're meant to have. Don't know how vital it is to have one, someone else might be able to help you out there

Have you checked out any private sellers? Seems to be a few good GL's being sold on car sales etc...

Well for perspective my old 98 GL with 149k went for 7500 early this year and that was really mint car, I honestly didn't have much interest in the car either, just the one person that was really keen.

So around 7k should be the absolute ceiling for a non VR6 mk3, unless you find a diesel or some freakishly nice condition CL/GL

Like i said, its never just the gas with these cars. A rebuilt a/c installed, flushed and gassed will cost u $900. And there is a bit of a difference in power between a cl and gl. If it were me, i would get a gl as they are easy to cruise around in. The 1.8's do really well on fuel tho, i would get 600+ out of a tank in my last car.

                4) The condensor is the heat exchanger located on the front of the car . Im pretty sure VW charger approx $1000 for a new one , aftermarket you can buy them for around $300-400 and Courtney is selling hers cause she is removing the A/C out of her Golf . The only genuine part that would cost 2k would be the a/c compressor

I paid even less than that for mine and it came with a complete service history, OEM roof-racks and 71k on the clock. Cars go for what they're worth, and only now can I say that its worth close to going rate for a nice VR6

On a Mk3, if the AC doesnt work, its usually the compressor. I sell S/H ones for $150, plus $50 fitting and $100 vacuum of the system and regass.

You could pay much more elsewhere, but thats usually what it is. Like Pedro says its never just a regas. The system should be charged forever unless there is a problem.

I can mail order you a compressor, but you need to fit it then get someone to vac and regass your system.

Edit, just noticed you have a VR6 which is a different compressor.
Not worth putting a second hand one on your car as it is lots of labour to do the job.
                              I can supply a recod VR6 one for $400.
