Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Golf GL...

Ok well, I'm 17 and want a frakin car already.

Looking for a '97/98 VW Golf GL, stock, in good condition, maunal, <140000km, in NSW... planning on some stuff for it too, so budgets $6500/
Something similiar to this. Actually it probally would be that if someone hadn't got their grubby hands on it before me.

Anyway, I can only wait to snap something like that up, you guys can't really help (unless you know of one)

Well all thats beside the point, I do actually need your help. Much to my lack of google skillz, I need to know some basic cost associated with these vechiles, such as:
    - General servicing
    - Gearboxes
    - etc

..oh and the replacement of problem items, which I can gather may be the electric windows on certain models???

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hey man, welcome to the forums. A lot of us are close to your age, you'd be surprised!

Anyways...the search function is your friend. Lots of people here ask the same questions all the time, so it's been covered in this section more times than you could be bothered poking a stick at

if you search the mk3 section for 'what to look for' then i think lots of info will come up. If not, someone will correct me and tell you what to search for

Good luck with your dub hunting!

      Consider this car.

It's a Seat Cordoba, it's basically a MK3 mechanically, it's got the right mileage and the right price for what you're after.

They drive nicely and are just as reliable as the MK3s without the pricetag.

Yeah thanks for that. Regular vBulletin user (nothisforumthough), and know the issues the search button causes. Now That I know what to search for it'll help heaps. Thanks.

I've seen a fair few with no lips lol. I reckon they just fall off or get scraped off and the owner either doesn't realise or doesn't care.

Thats a nice car but cars being bought before u get the chance is part of the game man. It's irritating as hell but dont let it get to you.

Heres a story, i went to look at a Pulsar SSS before I found my vr6. I wanted it badly. I'd driven a few already and really liked the look of this one. Turns out there was a guy in his living room signing the papers right then and there! Bitterly dissapointed BUT it meant I found my vr6 and have been happy as a lamb who has avoided the slaughterhouse

Moral of the story is thus: One door closes, another opens

Another picture for the front lip.

peedman- Generally should I be looking for one with 97/98, <150 clicks, working electrical everything (REVS CHECKED) and good, non worn out interior? Then just the general check over.

Definately check the a/c, if its not cold its never just the gas. Ive had to replace 2x a/c in 2 mk3s now and they arent cheap! Check the heater is working too. Look for rust in all the door jams and seals. Check floor carpets and boot too. Test power windows as well (common problem). See if headliner intact, no signs of sagging. Service record like timing belt, water pump, clutch etc. And then listen out for any knocks or noises and it steers and handles ok. Good luck with it! I think 6k and under would be a reasonable price, u could prob even get less for a private sale if u looked hard enough. Oh and tell them that the front lip is missing to haggle some more!

looks hideous without the front lip. first step when you get it is to buy a euro lip...

REVS check is just to see that it isn't still under finance, written off or stolen... it's got nothing to do with the electrics... It is definitely something you should do when buying a used car though. I just wanted to point that out...

If it has electric windows, make sure thy work. Also, make sure the heater and aircon work well. If there is any kind of feel that they are not super warm or super cold then be warned. aircon is expensive to replace.
