  • Proof of history - stories from the carpet

so today i pulled up the carpets and gave my baby a good clean - you know, see what 15 years has done to the floorpan, etc.

glad to report that the floor is totally rust free and in good condition (my mk3's a '94).

anyway, the tally of "trinkets" from under the carpet goes like this:

    2x 8mm ball bearings
    1x pencil
    1x red pen (not working)
    total of just $0.80 AUD
1x small (thumb sized) clay model of what looks like an owl (go figure)
    1x marble
    2x chocolate wrappers
    ...the cigarette lighter plug...and
1x japanese coin (small, has a '1' on it and appears to be made of a light alloy)

the last item i guess confirms that my CLi Turbo Diesel was a new car in Japan.... then sold in NZ to the last owners, who brought it to Australia (and thankyou for that!)

while i was there, i removed the old, flat, cotton waste insilation and replaced it with some lighter, plastic backed foam underlay....

altogether a bit of a laugh really

    (yeah, i'm easily amused)

Gotta love all the buried treasure you find in cars

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Did you find any peanuts anywhere? There's always peanuts somewhere. Most likely around the handbrake area.

I found 3 fender guitar picks, a day parking ticket from Ultimo in 2000 (which was $2.80 ), $8 in coins and 2 pens in my VR6 when I took the rear seats + carpet apart...

The coin was definately an interesting find.

So far underneath the rear seats in my VR I've found remnants of eggshells

Haven't been game enough to look under the rest of the carpet yet though

Having just been to Japan that does sound like a 1 Yen coin. Theyre about the size of a 5c peice but very light in colour and weight. Theyre also practically useless since I could find nothing that I could use up all the 1 yen coins I amassed!

Havent pulled all my carpet up, but when I was cleaning it the other week, between the dash and windscreen where you put your parking tickets, I found a few tickets (about 3 or 4) from Sydney from back in 1997 just after the car was bought. They had gone all brown and crispy but I still kept them!

I found a mint in my old mk3, as well as a few tickets from a melbourne parking garage of some description. The mint was delicious, old but delicious.
