Be glad its actually intact and not cracked, which disintegrates in your hands whilst your driving Mine too is also intact

As for aftermarket wheels, your best bet is to find a 3.5 cabriolet and fit the steering wheel and all onto the VR6 column.

ok lol so i get the home and go for my first cruise... after about 20 mins starts smelling like a rotten egg... weird but i thought it may have just been because the heater core needed replacing...

guess not. got to maccas at a later stage...30mins later turned it off went back and she wouldn't start...DAMN IT! so i popped the bonnet... to find a very hot battery that was steaming! so i called my free racv cover and a guy came and had a look....the battery pulled 2 volts when it tried to crank and 13.5 when it was just sitting...then we started the car of a jumper pack and the alternator was cranking out 17.5 volts.

alternator is screwwwwwed! where do i get one and how much???

Stu, I've still got a heap of Mk3 stuff here. Including a few alternators and a servicable MK3 battery.

(Although a GL and VR alternator might be different)

                some work:

took me 20 mins (and i had no idea how to do it ) i just ripped the front off the car and took the alternator out.

then i decided to give the car a wash and some places a buff where some scratches were...most came out but i couldn't move the car to where a had more space so i only did a little bit.

                not a bad little unit!!!

also had a question about the gauges...this is when the alternator was stuffed...have not tried it with a new alternator (hopefully it fixes the problem). As soon as the throttle left idle the gauges (fuel, temp, tacho, speedo...but the trip stayed and the time.) would just drop out. the air bag light and the abs light also came on. about 5 seconds after it returned to idle the oil pressure and handbrake light would flash and the gauges would read again.

would this be an earthing problem or would the high voltage from the alternator and the 2 volts from the battery would have been confusing the car?

also if all the things like a/c, headlights and so on were turned on the guages would drop out when the car revved to about 2 grand...

any ideas? hopefully just the battery and alternator problem.

The voltage reg that controls the power to the gagues should auto protect by shutting down on over heat, or over voltage so yes it could be alternator related.

yeh the heater core is the biggest thing but hey its only $280 for a brand spanker and the time and effort i have to put in...

haha yeh they closed v-power for the weekend to go racing

we should go for a mk3 cruise together and i guess other waterpumpers can tag along...

It's a real pain of a job from everything I have seen and heard. In the end I paid someone else to do mine, not that it helps you since they were in Sydney

For reference Wolfsburg did mine for $703.60 (inc GST) which included all parts, new coolant and new cabin air filter. Mind you the heater core itself was only $107.80.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

should be right...in the end you saw how much i did to my mk1 by myself...i should be all good for this job after all its just a series of clips, screws and bolts.

                              but thanks

It's doable if you have the patience, which I *might* have, but mine being a daily I couldn't guarantee it would be done over a weekend ready for monday morning so I too the easy way out
