Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Drivers Side Lock Barrel Swap

    Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone knows if it's possible and easy enough to swap the lock barrel on the drivers side door with the passenger side?

Didn't manage to find a tutorial but would greatly appreciate if someone has one they could link!

From memory you can, but what is the issue with it, most of the time it’s just a sticky gate

I'm not quite sure, haven't had a chance to look at it yet!

The central locking still works fine but the barrel seems to do nothing

There’s a little hook at the end that the barrel connects to the locking mechanism with. Usually this snaps off over time. VW revised the design to be stronger but it means the newer stuff available won’t fit into the hook as it’s too thick. I simply filed it down until I could hook it on. You can buy new sets pretty cheap and then just take out that part and swap it.

To quote myself from way back:

So you probaby just need something like this (just being the first link I hit on eBay):
for SEAT Ibiza door lock repair kit | eBay

Interestingly, same item for the golf version too
VW GOLF JETTA MK3 DOOR LOCK REPAIR KIT LEFT PASSENGER SIDE | eBay

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.
