Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

so the has become a queenslander...
the problem was with carby....taken out, cleaned up and we good to go.....
it ran great for few hours....it was believed to be starting of fuel....fuel pressure went up from 3psi to 4 psi....still running rough when u flatten it....half throttle you can go all the way up in revs and if at any stage after 3000rpm u decide to go full throttle it starts to choke...
good news....cluster board work once again as we have been guessing the speed i have been traveling... was off by 10-20 kms especially in 4th and fifth....
bad news....i have been smelling some exhaust fumes inside the cab...

few spelling mistakes...in the post before, but it will happen every time I don't proof read it....oh well...
moving on.... few thing that I have done is carbie clean up, instrumental cluster working once again,
drivers door handle replaced as it was broken and all the other locks replaced including ignition barrel...
if u never did ignition barrel before
Early mk2 ignition cylinder and ignition switch removal & replacement
great step by step place...
next step...cancelling fumes coming into the cab and fuelling under load or full throttle...
if anyone can tell me how to fix my problems please do, otherwise I will be moving at my own pace...

quick update....
fitted hose from rocker cover breather to underneath the car....
next problem splatering under open throttle:
1st - change driver - still there
2nd - change fuel filter - still there
next try to find choke as mine is disconnected, fingers crossed

When you've got the choke connected take it for a run with the choke on and see if it revs properly. If it does then you're running lean.
Also check the distributor is clean inside. Any carbon build up will cause problems.
Another trick is to start the car in the dark, lift the bonnet and see if there are any sparks along the spark plug leads, distributor or coil. If there are sparks replace your leads.
Cheers

will do paul...
today i ran into a new problem...could be from same issue just new problem...
warm morning....first it started on the 1st highway drive just splatering at low revs in 5th as i sat on 110...
went to 4th dropped to 90 nothing....5th n 100 all good so i just sat there....
on the way back sitting in traffic hot late morning 11ish as im about to take off lost power revs dropped to 0 and back up to 3000 like it was a defi gauge, pumped gass paddle few times n it took off...next lights same thing just this time it backed fired and we were good...
30 min later dropped mate hime and was on the way home, only to have it turn off on me completely....limped home n passed out in the air conditioned house....tomorrow its a new day new week new beginning....so we will see what that brings...

I've got a MK3 2.0 bottom end under a MK2 GTI head but distance is the killer.
Why not borrow a car trailer and collect the whole car.1978 MK1 2.0 16v http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...-46488-70.html

so it has been few months since last post, but we are still moving forward....still waiting for some parts and uni has been taking most of my time...as you can see engine has been test fitted and shafts from mk2 have been fitted on mk3 ends/cv joints...few other goodies just chilling there like gearbox linkage assembly, all the bushes, 2 out of 3 engine mounts (i have a mk2 engine mount for sale brand new as i ordered wrong one) and sunroof seal....
next is engine out change break booster and replace disks and drums with bigger disks on all 4 (btw mk3 is donor car), new clutch and head gasket will be done as well b4 engine goes back in...
if anyone knows what / how does the engine mount look or is called that sits on the support beam where the radiator is would be appreciated....
last 3 pic should be the engine mount for mk2 i want to sell....same price that i paid for plus local shipping instead of international(might save $20-$30)
