  • Mk2 in Cairo

Thought a few people may find this interesting, at least I did at the time. Didn't expect to see any golfs in Egypt, well I don't know what I was expecting to be honest but turns out there's a decent amount of Mk2's and Mk3's roaming around Cairo in particular, the rest of the country seemed to mainly be Fiats and Peugeots. Most were pretty far gone as are 90% of the cars on the roads there but I stumbled upon this one in a street not far from where I was staying.

I think there's a strong old VW scene in Egypt. The local wrecker sent 20 MK1's there last year, together with 25 old Kombi's.

Interesting, I would have taken the 20 MK1's and 25 Kombi's haha. From what I gathered from a local the reason there's some many old beat up cars is because of pricing. An old Fiat 123 or 125 that's banged up to hell and back but still runs well will apparently fetch $3000-4000USD and was told it didn't have any thing to do with it being collectable but because the majority can't afford newer vehicles so they keep refurbishing older ones, kinda like Cuba I guess but for a different reasoning.

And then they have to convert to LH drive as RH drive is a big no-no there.
