Get the car up to operating temperature, open the bonnet and feel the two rubber pipes that go from the motor to the firewall (and on the the heater). The pipes are about 2cm in diameter. Both of them should be warm/hot. If not, the water isn't going through your heater and you won't get any heat out of it.

If only one is warm you've got a blockage somewhere that isn't letting hot water flow through the heater and out via the 2nd rubber pipe.

        Cheers

Are you losing any coolant at all? Maybe the heater flap is broken, is it still blowing cold air when you switch it to hot or does it change a little? I think the heater flap in the golf is vacuum fed so possible a leak or a broken flap...

The flap is a common problem from what I hear. This has happened to mine ARGH

i rekon you my be right, when the car idles in traffic and warms up to half, the heater blows hot air, when i start to drive the temp gauge cools all the way down to the bottom, and the heater goes cold.

                      Hello,

My Mk2 was exactly the same.
New heater core - no change
New Thermostat - no change (but temp guage now steady)
Replaced hot / cold air vent flap material - no change

Rip out the Valve added for Mk2 heater recall - replace with copper plumbing pipe and it's now too hot.

I can see the coolant system "residue" that has blocked and seized it up.

Just need Air con regas for summer now
