Just had a look at German Autoparts , they seem to indicate that it's the smaller sender that runs the gauge.

Coolant temperature sensor, 10mm threaded, single pin. For temperature gauge. New style sensor with nail head connection, replaces original with male spade terminal connection.
Shop over 10,000 VW & Audi parts in stock for same-day shipment. Use our extensive online catalog to find the OEM and Genuine parts you need fast.

It's going to be one or the other of those 2 senders!

I think its the single one plus a wire which comes out of the fuel pump relay which i havent put in yet. I beleive the guage works on varying resistance in the terminal on the end of the head. So maybe having this second wire in would double my current reading?

Also it seems i don't have an alternator issue. It was getting worse tonight and stalling on virtually every heavy deceleration. But i couldn't really see why a flattening battery would really effect a warm diesel apart from the fuel solinoid. So i filled up my tank as it was getting low and all power returned and the alternator light hasnt come on since. This maybe that the little bit of petrol left in the tank has just sat at the bottom, or perhaps i need a new fuel filter. It was noticabily worse when i removed power from the lift pump.

        Good Job Mate.

I wouldn't be too concerned about using the coil wire for the stop solenoid. I can't remember measuring the voltage at the coil wire when i did mine, but it worked, and i had no problems.

That's fair. I reallised the other week i'm only going to be in Australia for 4 or 5 months in the next 2 years. And when i am here i live, work and study within a couple of hundred metres of each other. Then my parents have a collection of air-cooleds, so theres always a car to borrow if I do need a car.

Price drop to $3000 due to new roof damage - See the for sale page.
