Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I had to take the Turbo kit off in order to import it. It was installed in the 80's! I will reinstall it and blog it. I'm so tempted to install a modern engine and FI sytem...... At this point I think I will try and keep it original with the exception of the turbo.

I try to take good care of it. People always ask me "when did you restore it?" I've always just maintained it I guess... when do you call it a restoration? When the 30 year old paint faded into a burnt orange, I painted it. When the seats broke, I replaced them. When the carpet was stained I replaced it, when the suspension bushings were worn I rebuilt the front end, etc etc. When is it a repair or when is it a restoration? I did all of the repairs at different times.....

There is always a long list of stuff to fix on it.....
        My current list...
        Fix up A/C
        Replace worn window gasket
Paint valve cover (or reinstall the callway valve cover)
        Install knock computer
        adjust brakes
        Find a ash tray
Touch up the hood where I scratched it when I left my wiper arm up and opened the hood... Grrr.....
        Fix glove box

Always something to fix on it.... And it's a challenge when you have to make parts or search for hours on the internet finding a new part

You look on the internet for parts?

          I go to my supplier.

He used to have 70 MK1's but he's now down to about 20 and these are full of rust. But, for bits and pieces he can't be beat.

I think that 1985 was the last year for the MK1 Rabbit in the States. After that it went to the Golf Mk2.

They made the Rabbit longer in Mexico and and South America but the GTI was not available, I'm fairly sure but don't quote me on it. Don't want to get flamed for putting up the wrong information.
