    I hate sad endings.

You know the only way you can redeem yourself is to build another MK1.

Epilogue: I sold my yellow 2.0 litre 16 valve Mk1 Golf to a guy from the Central Coast who basically just put it in a container with all the spares I sold him with it. But then he sold it... to of all people Stephen Muller from Volksmuller Sydney, who'd seen the car race in Rallysprints at Awaba Newcastle and Nabiac, where I beat his VW Beetle on a number of occasions. He got it for his son, who raced it. They've just got another shell for it, and Stephen has told me I can expect to see the car back on the track again before too long. Where the white one went I have no idea - but it's body was truly mint. I knew a woman like that once, and she was white too!

Yes, Sports Racer, I had a chequered and very unusual CV. You can also include Film & videotape editor, news cameraman, and drug & alcohol councilor to my career history. But if you go to trivia nights I wonder if you can spot the common thread between being a clergyman and a professional taxidermist???

        Both professions stuff things up?

        Sorry, couldn't resist.

At a guess I'd say both professions like to see an outcome even after death.

        Cheers

        Paul

This is absolutely incredible. 'nuff said.

the guy you sold the yellow 16v to sounds like a guy i came across last year and just missed out on buying his mk1! turned out it was mikinoz's old mk1 can the guy had it in a storage shed for something close to or more than 1.5 years! body and everything was outstandingly mint! stick kick myself everyday for not managing to get it, but in saying that, grabbed myself a beauty anyway haha

love hearing these stories, always seems like its just the tip of the iceberg n just wanna hear more

Wow, what a read! Such rich history of vw and fun in the same sentence. It was a blast reading through it all mate, thanks for that.

I too, stumbled onto Honda a few years ago and have been a changed man since. I now own a 88 crx with a 1.8L vtec motor from an Integra TypeR. It is phenomenal, and it does fantastic on a race track! In having said that, I could never completely walk away from my mk1's haha.

George that sound sweet! I've built & am racing the only EG Civic Hatch in Australia or New Zealand with a 3.0 V6 V-Tec & 6 speed box. You'll find it in the playlists on my WJP004 You Tube channel. Where about are you & where do you race?

Wow, you're running the accord 3.0? I dont think there are many of those conversion in AUS at all.... Isn't it too heavy on the nose end?

I'm in VIC mate, and just do a few runs around winton here and there, would love to essentially get into Natures Organic vic hillclimb championship!

The V6 engines tend to be alloy and only weight ~40kg more than a 4 cylinder

There are numerous V6 FWD's - Mondeo, Accord, Alfa, Opel, etc
The V6 normally leans well forward of the shock tower, if it was a problem it would not work in the original car
2012.1 Skoda Octavia VRS DSG Wagon - Carbonio cold air intake and pipe - HPA Motorsports BBK 355mm rotors 6 pot calipers
APR Stage II ECU - APR 3" exhaust down pipe & high flow catalyst
APR/HP Roll bars - Eibach springs and Bilstien shocks
Supaloy lower control arms - Enkei 18*8 Wheels

I think Georges question is specifically with respect to autocross/ gymkhana. For instance, if you were building an autocross car, it might be preferable not to have that extra ~40kg ahead of the front axle.

Thanks very much to Redlina for creating this thread - its fantastic to see all the fun you've clearly had over the years in MK1's.

In outright terms it makes little difference in an 1100kg that has ~60%+ of the weight at the front - it's an extra 3.6% at the front

FWD is great for hill climbs and autocross and skidpan - because you can set them up with a lively tail and get on the power very early (where as with RWD you have to wait for the rear to calm down before hitting the go peddle).

The extra weight at the front is more of a problem at the race track where you can encounter a lot of under steer
Even then, it's surprising to me that at the track I regularly see Mitsubishi Magna's and 380's (3.8L V6) converted into full time race cars - people say they have good front suspension and plenty of grunt

Less than 10kg difference in my car from the iron FS
most of the difference is with extra kit of the luxury model, well that is all gone now

Those Magna's with 380's are a formula developed by the ex-powertrain lead at MMA, 200kW at the wheels...
FWD is all about the diff set up on track, my 106kW was right with the E30 cars (about 110kW) would qual top3 or so but usually beat themI would get better starts and as apex speed was higher they would struggle to pass

But this thread isn't about that!

Sorry mate, what I meant about the V6 wasn't in a general sense of the FWD but more so to the EG civic! There are very few to my knowledge that have had the J30 accord swap in a civic chassis within Aus!!

Figured a B18 or K24 would be much easier to swap and lower CC for you class, as opposed to a 3.0?

PS: the magna 380's go very very hard haha.
