  • So the gearbox rebuild has been keeping me busy of the late. The internals look very good overall, only issue has been a broken synchromesh and a decaged bearing that will need to be replaced.

To those who know 020s, this is the gearbox code that is getting a spruce up...

      • Yay! Cracked synchro hub discovered after reassembly... Time to press it off again and source a replacement. Lucky I have 3 unusable 020s sitting around

        • So.
Here is the latest with the gearbox rebuild. Me being the novice that I am, I accidentally forgot to put the thrust washer under first gear, and as a result, 1st gear was floating when I assembled the output shaft. This lead me to believe that I had not pressed the 1st/2nd sync hub all the way on, so I kept pressing... and pressing... and pressing... until finally...

There goes the output shaft through the bellhousing. [emoji17]
Lucky I have a spare case due to completely destroying the selector shaft cover on disassembly. So the rebuild started again, again.
Some pictures of second time around

And the home-made press to close the main case

          And the finishing touches

          Complete

I wad considering painting it body colour for ultimate baller spec, but reading that painted gearboxes can cause oil temps to peak 10 degrees higher than an unpainted gearbox, I decided to play it safe.

          Finally a summary:
          Code: AWY
          Ratios: 3.45 1.94 1.44 1.13 0.89
          Ring/pinion: 3.94:1

          Rebuilt with:
          - All new synchromesh on every gear
          - New pinion bearing
          - Diff bolt kit
          - Late style 3rd/4th sync hub
          - All new seals, gaskets and circlips
          - 90mm CV flanges

Now just for the install, which means engine out for the 3rd time this year... Perks of having a mk1 daily driver. I've also got another small project in the works for the sweetheart, which should be a little bit of fun.
          Stay tuned.

Specialist, no. Enthusiast, yes. I'll consider myself a specialist if she moves under her own power

Good work on the box, I'm always really scared to do anything gearbox related.

                    • Fun little weekend at Winton in the Sweetheart. Rebuilt gearbox installed and some semi-slicks equals a world of fun on the track. A whole new dose of issues has surfaced, so engine out again is on the cards.
Enjoy the music of those twin Dellortos

                        • How good is winton as a track? I love it man. Carbs sounds awesome too

                          What issues arose?

When I used to race my Honda I was on 1.44 and you look pretty quick so I'd say your time would have been much better than 1.51 with a proper timer!

                          • Just some alternator issues that prevented me from getting the whole way home. Rear main seal is leaking (I suspect). I'm going to replace both front wheel bearings and ball joints. They're all original 1976 hardware still

                            • Good to see you're using the correct MK1 high tech lateral gravitational measuring device and it's mounted properly - hanging from the rearview mirror.

                              Car sounds good.

                              Cheers
