After experiencing some vibration during high speed cornering, I discovered that the diff is completely shagged. There is some sort of slop between the left and right hand side, but I can't pinpoint how or where other than its in the differential area.

Anyone experienced anything similar to this in the past? Is there a simple solution or best to just swap the whole gearbox out? I'm expecting the worst tbh.

Also, is anyone selling a 020 with a quaife or peloquin etc? Would love to swap in a lsd while I have the opportunity.
The spider gears in the diff hemisphere itself are getting slack ( amongst general wear on the splines etc of the flange drives, wear or disintergration of the plastic inner liner bearing ) check your oil for metal flakes, once the gears are worn enough to go under the heat treated surface they wear like crazy. One box I stripped here the spiders were like severely pitted.
Now is the time to man up with the wallet and get that wavetrac in, or at the very least swap it out for a tighter std hemisphere ( bolt kit for ring gear at the same time is a good investment as well )

In fitting any different diff you will need to set the rolling torque ( bearing preload ) correctly to ensure optimum life .
    Good luck.
    Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

    Cheers,

    • To all those who doubted the 1600 AFT and its potential, here is a video of her reaching 8000RPM
Peak power figure was 78.5kW ATW at ~ 6500RPM
Will post a scan of the printout when I get access to a scanner

The second plot is kW vs Air Fuel Ratio. She was running rich from around 3500RPM. Hopefully if I correct the mixture (rejetting/professional tune) I could be seeing an even higher figure!

All in all, >100WHP in a carbed 1600 8v is a fantastic result in my mind. And the driving experience is second to none!

Now to replace that knackered gearbox...

                  • So I've been having issues with overfueling to the carbs, resulting in flooding the float bowls and filling the air socks with fuel... After two separate engine fires I had had enough.

First mistake was switching to an electric fuel pump, as the old mechanical pump on the block was more than capable of the delivery requirements. With the addition on a regulator and pressure gauge, we should have trouble free motoring ahead.

Engine out, mechanical pump installed. Also timed the ignition and reduced the main jet size to lean out the powerband.

All back together and headed down to the Springvale cars, coffee and donuts meet.

On to rebuilding my spare gearbox(es). Should be an interesting result.

                    • Nice..... Yeah the mechanical pump is more then enough. Good work Jordan. nothing beats building and knowing your car.
Also might want to sus out a 02j box as there becoming very affordable ATM. Also the next best thing would be the 02m 6 speed.

A little late I'm afraid... I've already got 2 020s torn apart on the garage floor.

Just have to combine the good bits from both of them. The diff rivets are definitely not one of the good bits.
Better make up my mind about getting an LSD as well...

                          • Nice work man. I would have thought a fuel pressure regulator would have fixed your issue with over fueling?

Also in terms of the gearbox, there really is no real reason to upgrade to the 02j as you're not making an enormous power. But the feel of the cable shifter..... wow haha. Well worth it. Also Peter, I'm pretty sure it's A LOT of work to fit an 02m in the mk1.

                            • Yeah depending on your driving syle and the rest of the setup I guess. Na 02M conversion is now available for the mk1s George. So now we have more options hahahah.

                              • I'm sticking with the 020 gentlemen. She doesn't make enough power to lug around the added weight of a 02A/J/M. Plus I love the cable clutch and mechanical linkage feel!

And the 020 code that will be going in, is something that I can't pass up...
