  • Well I said I'd review the brakes once I knew how they performed so here goes.

I've driven the car for about 120km to this point and am blown away with the braking performance. Initially, there was little response from the pedal and I was considering swapping back to the gti brakes, but with a small adjustment to the rear drums (bloody spring-loaded wedge thingos), pedal feel was drastically improved.

Car pulls up phenomenally, and with the Mk3 booster and m/c combo, pedal feel is very nice. Have not locked the wheels up yet (I haven't needed to), but the feedback up to that point is very reassuring.

I strongly recommend 280mm discs for anyone in a mk1, with any callipers you can get your hands on that will work. The GM callipers that I'm using were cheap and hassle free to mount (no adapters needed) and using mk4 brake lines, connected up easily too.

Next up, rear disc conversion. But not for a while I think.

To those coming to DOVW, I'll be seeing you. My car will be pretty hard to miss haha. Looking forward to it!

    • Are the brakes so good compared to a standard MK1 or compared to a modern car?

      • So good compared to the gti brakes I was running. They are comparable to modern brakes in performance imo

Will have to sort the photos off the dslr and upload some better ones

Trust me to take over 1000 photos, and have none of my own car haha

                      • Extractors went in yesterday and my god they're an improvement! The power delivery is so smooth and the throttle response is unreal.

4-2-1 wasn't my first choice but it really does give this engine some much needed low end torque. Reline is still a very comfortable >6500rpm.

To top it off, I shut the engine off this morning and about 5 seconds later, the biggest backfire imaginable through the exhaust. Must be those super rich jets I'm still running haha.

I'm hoping to get some small jobs done on the car over the Christmas break so stay tuned. Might have to get a video as well as the sound this engine/exhaust combo make is just so delightful to listen to.

                        • Home-made two tone door cards are in (they have been for a while) and matching rears to boot. Pretty simple really, especially with the help of the ragtop carpenter, Marcus Aurelius.

On a side note, hit the big 300k today! What a milestone on the first day of the year

Congrats on getting it looking good and it sounds like you're happy with the way it goes too. Double win.

                              • Pic from the MMC Walhalla Cruise today. Was actually such a mad drive with some mad people and some mad weather!

Also, the Sweetheart turns 40 years old this month, so there's a present for her in the works. Should be a nice addition to her package.

P.S. The mk1 killed it in the twisties. S2000s didn't stand a chance haha.
