The engine is finally bolted in! Next up is wiring and plumbing. Both tasks will require a bit of mix and match of old and new.



The dizzy cap and brake reservoir almost touches each other. Any ideas how to solve this?

Edit:
I'm well aware that the engine/gearbox/entire bay looks terrible but i need to be certain that the engine functions as it should before I sink time and money into it.

I had the same problem with the gear shift linkage hitting the manifold.

I just straightened out the arm and adjust the length of one of the links.

Distributor cap from a Saab fits really well.



The leads come off the side, not the top.

Is it just the cap? Or the entire distributor? And which Saab model is it?

Caps from a Saab 900 or 900s will fit the vw distributor. Its how I solved my distributor clearance issues with the intake manifold

Actually Saab isn't that common in Denmark... We have insane taxes on cars here in Denmark (roughly 180%), which means that a Saab cost roughly 100.000 aud. For that kind of money people tends to choose VAG or BMW. Those brands offer better services.

We have a different view on distances than you guys. People can't be bothered driving 20 km for a checkup on their car.

More stuff has been bolted into place.


Todo list:
- fabricate inlet manifold
- buy bike carbs and fuel pump
- figure out how to get vacuum to the brakes
- figure out the wiring for ignition

A quick view trough the garage

When you build/buy an intake manifold make sure there is a place to connect the brake vacuum line built in. It needs to be in the manifold, between the carby and the engine. When you take your foot off the accelerator to brake the carby butterfly valves close but the engine is still turning over which creates a suction in the manifold which works the vacuum line to the brake booster.

I think only Aussies appreciate distance. I once drove my MK1 from Canberra to Townsville (2500 ks one way) to see friends for a few days then drove back. We did the return trip in 2 days. Never again.

I might end up just buying a manifold. It will probably take me forever to get it done.

How is your crankcase vented? I was considering adding an air filter straight to the stock crankcase breather plate. Is that possible?
