Thanks sports racer - good to know about the rain cover I'll toss it!

I found this thread which mimicked my exact experience. View topic: Leak Problem - Please help! – The Mk1 Golf Owners Club

I am scared by the idea of rust. The last owner had it garaged, so I'm hoping that this water issue is only fairly recent :S

Rust gets worse over time. The sooner it's found and treated the easier it will be.

Pull up the carpets and check out the floor. And make sure it's all dry underneath, even if you have to take out the seats (easy job) and sit there with a hairdryer (hard job unless you've got heaps of porn on your phone to watch while it's drying).

Thanks, yep there is a bit of water there.

Do you know what this is? All I can think of it's part of the (no longer working) after-market air con?

Don't get the scuttle tray from VW Heritage. its for the South African Version.

I learnt the hard way, I have one in my Garage... Luckily got a refund and was told to keep it.

I know Mark from Classic-vw in the UK is making a mould, but I think this has been in the pipe line for a long time with very little progress.

Keep your eye out on EBay, I got a decent 2nd hand one for not much money.

            So far:

205s -> 195s to eliminate rubbing on the chassis
Learnt about scuttle trays and cleaned out accordingly
Replaced shifter bushings and gear linkages (Thanks fellow VWW member EltonKing for the hand I couldn't have done it without you)
Replaced front end tie rod and end (that was what was causing the play in the steering wheel, the steering rack is fine)

            Next on the list:
            Replace leaking core/welch plugs
Work out why the wiper squirter motor isn't squirting
Maybe - Remove the aftermarket air con.

Thanks everyone so far for your tips... Having fun learning and she's coming along!

Your very first post says you were quoted $800 to fix the rack. Now do you know why we all told you your mechanic is crap.

Congrats on doing the work yourself and fixing all the things needed to get this great little car back on the road. Bet you're learning heaps and feeling much better about your mechanical abilities.

Yeah for sure! Slowly getting my confidence up, but coming from almost zero so it's a process...

Fixed the wiper squirter today.. It was just a disconnected hose. Who knows how much that would have cost me to get done!

Side note: as one of the welch plugs is leaking slightly, I'm slowly losing water/coolant. Am I ok to just keep it topped up with tap water until it's fixed? I'm not really driving very far (5kms at a time max) between garages etc...
