hows the build going so far? much progress to report?
But no really, I like to look distinguished when I step out of the car. People are like, "wonder what he does for living."
I just reply, "your daughter, sir." - some dude on stanceworks

I had fixed half the broken crap but that just meant it was still halfway inoperable

Only picking up the S3 on saterday, and then found a guy in the UK who can supply me with a engine mount set and a gearbox and transfer box mount set for about $500. Someone is coming around tomorrow to look at my Mk1 8V motor and he is interested in it for $500. Will keep everyone posted on my build thread...

Hmmm, it appears that the Front Left CV running loose has done some damage...
Either the CV is now dying, or the wheel bearing is...

It all started after an 'aggressive' right hand u-turn in peak hour traffic at my sons school...

I'm getting some lovely noises from the front left, and they keep changing on me...
It started with only making noise whilst gently turning right.
Then changed to only when moderately turning left.
Now it's only quiet when moderately turning right...

Still, she is still getting from A to B, so I can't really ask for much more than that.

MK1@4Motion, how much of the front end are you keeping off of the Mk1?
Would love some front shocks/springs, hubs and maybe even outer cv's... (Can't use inners unless you had 100mm ones)

Jack up the wheel and see if you can wobble it up/down and left/right. If it wobbles then the bearing is faulty.

I just had a worn wheel bearing that I fixed the easy way. Upgraded to MK3 2 litre hubs and brakes which was as simple as unbolting the old ones and bolting on the new ones.

          Cheers

            Forgot to update this issue...
Even though I had checked the outer cv nut, that was what was causing my noises again...
Tightened it up with my breaker bar, and a 1m pipe... Shouldn't come loose easily again, and six weeks later, it's still all good.

Also, when I put the roof up a couple of weeks ago, I managed ripped the securing latch handle clean off.
Apparently I don't know my own strength...

So, when I started looking into buying a new roof handle, I very quickly decided that the $300+ price from VW Aus was just crazy...
Then I checked online, and found several for ~$130 delivered...

Being the tight arse that I am, I built one instead...
A few scraps of metal, a drill/grinder/welder, and some paint, and now I have this...

Apart from the average welding, it looks great, and works even better...

For a dodgy bolt on body kit, that's one nice cabby.
                  Love the roof cover too.

Guess I've never liked the visable bolts on flares, and then you have the visable bolts on the front skirt, and lastly, the valance is off of a later model VW, and doesn't quite fit the shape of the front...

That all said, the whole car as a package, works well...

That was me driving the Van. I live on Majura road out on a farm near the Springfield farm. Good to see a Mk1 drive around.

Looks like the bearings on the main shaft of my gearbox are now stuffed...
Up on the car stands, and lots of rumbling right up till the clutch is depressed, regardless of gear...

I feel that this is going to get expensive...

                                So, a couple of questions...

                                1. How 'straight forward' is splitting the box and replacing the bearings?
                                2. Anyone recommend a good vw gearbox mechanic around Canberra?
                                3. Anyone have a 020 gearbox going cheap?
