Had a couple more little jobs before roadworthy. Made a parcel tray, had to replace my rack ends, I had to remove my fuel sender and re-solder the connections so my fuel gauge would work and then give everything a once over, adjust the suspension. Looks like I forgot to take photos of the parcel tray, I'll snap some soon.

Then off it went for a blueslip, greenslip and rego. I got all that finished on Saturday and I've done about 320 k's since then. This car is the best, so much fun. Even with the 3 speed. I'm going to drive that to death and hopefully the line I have on a 5-speed works out and I can smang that in.

I think next will be some more low and a set of rims.

So, it's been a little while, time for a small update.

As you probably saw, I had some issues with the car stalling whenever I came to a stop or even just put it into drive. This took me ages to overcome. I initially mucked around with all kinds of things, the coil, the timing, the carb. I decided to ditch the solex since it puked fuel everywhere and I didn't feel like I was getting anywhere with it. I swapped it out for a Weber 32/26 DGV with someone at some point had converted to a DVE. I got rid of all the pollution and emissions stuff from the engine, plugged up the manifold and got the car somewhat useable.

It had a pretty gross hesitation so I took it to my local carby guy to see if he could smooth it out. When I picked it up it ran worse than ever and he must have played with the float level because it started stalling around left hand corners. I was pretty bummed at this point and since the car had had a miss since new I thought I may as well adjust the valve spacing for piece of mind before I did anymore. This left me even more bummed because it took over a month for the valve decompressor to arrive (anyone in need of a lend just shoot me a message). So once the decompressor arrived I re-shimmed the valves and decided to have another look at my carby.

The first thing I thought I should do was re-set the float level, I took the top plate off the carb only to find one of the main jets floating around in the bowl.... cool.... that would have been helping. So I fixed that up readjusted the float height and after an hour or so of mucking around realised a major part of my troubled was coming from the Auxiliary Venturis. The venturis themselves were installed correctly, however at some point in time (the carby wasn't new, I got it off Matt and he had no idea where he got it from) someone had rotated the tube in the venturi so that the outlet was pointing towards the intake and not towards the manifold so it wasn't sucking any fuel in. Got the car running like a top.

Changed my wheels, converted to a manual choke and drove it around for about two and half weeks until yesterday. On the way home from work my ****ty auto box ate itself. It had always been pretty **** going into drive and reverse, taking a while to actual bump into gear and sometimes in Drive it would rev up high for no reason as if it had been bumped into neutral. So yeah it's a mess now and I'm looking for a new gear box.

I've got quite a bit of stuff already to convert over to a manual box,

            - Tranny Mount
            - Pedals
            - Clutch Cable
            - Accelerator Cable
            - Starter Motor
            - Steering Column with the mount for the clutch pedal

I'm fairly sure all I'm missing is the box. So if anyone has a 5-speed for sale, or knows someone who does please let me know haha. Preferably with 90mm spindles but if I have to go to 100mm at this stage it's no big deal.

Anyway, here are just a couple photos of the car as it was until yesterday. I'd been driving it to work everyday and besides the few small issues with the box it was running great. Always had a smile on my face driving anywhere!

              Trans swap

Your going to need a manual steering rack ( has the bracket for the gearshift linkage to bolt to ) and a complete 5 speed linkage from the gear lever to the trans ( some parts ARE different from a 4 speed linkage ) May wanna chase up a centre console too.
When you have the column out, make sure you reinforce the bulkhead ( firewall ) where the cable goes thru ( will save you having to fix it later when it fails )

Pick up the flywheel, pressure plate, drive plate, starter motor, Intermediate plate, when you find a transaxle, will save you some bother and time later.
              Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

              Cheers,
              Grant...

Amazing effort, so much involved! Good to see a classic being 'unruined' and returned to it's former glory.
