  • okay then, update.

put new bolts in the inlet manifold because there was a big gap between the gasket and head, about a mil wide so thats been taken care of.

new problem which i think is the problem for it not idling. when we took the air cleaner off and looked at what the carby was doing when running we saw a problem. when taking your foot off the accelerator then a load of fuel shoots into the carby (between a teaspoon and table spoon full) and floods it, have absolutely no clue why.

    cheers guys

    • You've got the manual fuel pump (the one inside the carby) setup backwards. It's supposed to pump the fuel as you accelerate not decelerate.

Your linkage should look something like this so that as you push down on the pedal the long arm moves clockwise to open the throttle

You can see the idle adjustment screw on the end of the arm.

        • The basics are the same. The long piece that you are touching in your picture must move clockwise to control the throttle opening and work with the brass assembly above your finger. In your picture you have the long piece on the left of the brass bits, it should be on the right.

I'll pm you my phone number. Give me a ring.

          Cheers

                  • ok, so every single thing in the golf works..

except reverse. i dont know a thing about how the linkage works and dad took a look and cant figure it out either, he tried to adjust it but its still not working

this is what makes a good day bad.

                    • Should be an easy fix.

Put it in neutral and move the gearknob left and right whilst someone watches the linkages. That way you can see which linkage needs adjusting. Now adjust it longer - does it get into reverse? No, then shorten it. With a bit of adjustment you should get it to work.

And congrats on getting this far. Well done.

                      • Just making sure, not assuming that you don't, but you're selecting reverse by pushing the gear shift down and then into first yeah? The procedure for adjusting linkages is written up fairly well in the bentley manual, I can scan it tomorrow if you don't figure it out from what you've got!

                              • Looking at the front of the car rotate the shaft clockwise to make it easier to get to the 1-2 gate is where I would start. I'll scan the pages from Bentley at lunch time mate.
