  • a few questions as I just bought a 1976 golf ls

Hello, my name is che from coolangatta. qld.

    I just bought a 1976 Golf LS with 1600cc, K-jet.

Car just goes great! except has a few issues..

    1. tacho is not working. And brake, hand brake warning light is off (can't find the wire switch)

    2. has K-jet but the belt is off from the alternator I reckon
    - previous owner told me there was a backfiring, misfiring before he took off the belt for fuel injector.
now it seems working real fine without the belt.. but couldn't it be better with k-jet working right?

and I can smell the fuel from inside of car.. it could be running rich or fuel leak?
is it related to k-jet? any ideas please..

    3. transmission oil is leaking a little bit..

    4. there's a switch for the cooling fan on the dashboard (modified)
I have to switch on as the temp go higher than mid
Isn't this supposed to work automatically?
-fan is working fine as switched on and temp stays on mid but just annoying to do it manually.

    5. he told me there was a fire on dash from bad wiring..
now dash is burnt and cluster looks really bad. maybe it caused the tacho and brake warning light i guess.
    can I get it anywhere?

    6. where can I get a locking fuel tank cap?

I will be appreciated with your helps..

hope to see mk1 owners on the road! never seen one around here!

Welcome to the joys of MK1 ownership Che.

Can you post a picture of the engine bay? The LS model never came out with fuel injection so someone has fitted the K-jet. I'd love to see where the belt goes that was taken off to make it run better.

If you had a meltdown then anything could be wrong with the electrics. You need to repair or replace your wiring loom and instrument cluster. There's always someone wrecking a MK1, just check the Parts For Sale section of this forum.

There should be a thermo switch on the radiator with 2 wires coming out of it. This is the automatic fan control and should turn the fan on when it gets hot. With your melted wires it could have killed the power to this switch.

Fuel leak could be anything. Clean the engine and then start it up and go looking for the leak.

Locking petrol cap can be bought from Supercheap or a wreckers, it's a generic size.

Post some pictures of your car, we'd love to see what it looks like.

    Cheers

    Paul

      here are some photos!

no biggy rust or dents. but window seals are badly worn.

this is swallow tail, ei? and you can see the bad fuel cap!

      dash condition is pretty bad..

mechanic told me the belt was for exaust..

and I remember the previous owner mentioned only backfiring not misfire..

      I supposed I don't need that!

the second v belt ran the Exhaust recirculation pump thats sitting under the alternator there, you can unbolt it and take it off to get a bit more room in there. most of the emissions gear is clogged up or stopped working on them by now and is usually taken off and the pipes blocked up.

doesn't look like a swallowtail from the photo but it's a very cool colour, how is it rust wise?

Tacho or odometer, or both? Handbrake switch is under the carpet at the front of the handbrake (on my car anyway)

Backfiring can be lots of things. My engine bay is basically the same as yours (same carb from what I can see, had the same emissions gear etc.) I've removed emissions gear and repaired lots of vacuum leaks by replacing gaskets and hoses. shouldn't be too hard to find...

                3. transmission oil is leaking a little bit..

Wash it down to find out where from specifically, regardless it'll probably be the most difficult thing to fix in your list

Common half-ass repair, yes it's supposed to be automatic via a temp-sensing switch on the radiator (from memory)

                can I get it anywhere?

Ebay, wreckers, part outs on the forum, or Camden GTI

                6. where can I get a locking fuel tank cap?

Ebay 'MK1 Autohaus', and probably a bunch of other places

                    further questions.

I will get a new cluster. but the problems is

brake and handbrake warning light switch has no wires..
I can see the wires from master cylinder goes into the dash but. there are nothing goes to the warning light switch.

and one more wire from flexible circuit board on the cluster multiplug the number 3 wire has cut.

which is one of wires for tacho i think.

these are might be from dash burning which was the previous owner told me I reckon.

could anyone help me to wire these things up?

It will be working perfect golf with these 2 wires..

anyone can please figure this out?

this picture shows that T10/3 RED WIRE has been cut. this one is for tacho (from previous owner)

and I found this wire on fuse box..
                      It's from yellow pin pulg #14. It's F14

I just wanted to confirm if those 2 wires are the same one..

my car is 1976 golf LS and it's different diagram from the UK mk1 club wiring diagram.

Can anyone who has the same model as mine confirm this, please?

plus please figure out for brake warning light please..

                      please...

Yellow plug is for the rear harness, tail lamps, fuel guage, rear wash wipe if fitted. the early cars had the tacho feed seperate from the relay plate.

Try to find a manual by tractor & mechanical, has a good colour wiring diagram in it for the early Golfs.
                        Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

                        Cheers,

                          thank you.

I found this!! Servicing the Volkswagen Golf | National Library of Australia

btw. you mean tacho wire is direct from the ignition coil to dash?

and any idea if mine is supposed to have brake warning light?

also found these in the engine bay.

this is from brake servo? one vacuum line hose is blocked by a screw.

I don't know what this is. (its near gearbox, and front of radiator..)
                            one wire is cut....

is my carby looks alright?.. auto choke seems weird..

I'm gonna change the rubber mount as I can hear air leak..
                            Is it a easy job?

Yeah, the "book" in question is the one !!! get a copy.

tacho wiring was listed as an option in the "book" and has wiring diag to suit. Basically it is from the RED wire at position 3 on the dash multi pin plug to the coil ( same side as the points ) shows it being green and from memory having a connector down near the relay plate / fusebox.
