Stress or strain??
From my experience you need to apply pressure to the off-side of anything that you are trying to separate. Doesn't matter if it's a ball joint, track rod end or cylinder head it needs to be levered away from the component with the greater mass before applying a shock. So in the case of your manifold (which I haven't seen and am only imagining) put a lever between it an the block/head/immovable object and then hit with a fibre/wooden/rubber mallet to dislodge. But, before you do anything more, check and double-check that there isn't something that you've missed still holding it on. I've done it a million times and cursed myself blue the same number.

one bolt in the bottom of the inlet manifold with a flat bracket between it and a bolt in the top of the exhaust manifold.
its usually rusted. just undo it till the bolts snap then leave it off. 12 or 13mm spanner.sigpic Camden GTI Performance. VW / AUDI Specialists

Hope your ok!
Now go to the fridge, grab a coldie. Knock the top off it, enjoy it while looking at the manifold contemplating. "why"?
Seriously though they can be damn frustrating. For memory years ago you could get a bonding compound for manifold/exhaust gaskets that went rock hard, it may have a similar product on it.
Once finished your beer, grab the piece of wood and sledge and lightly tap it off. We are all cheering for you.
