Time for an update.
Josh gave me a front end (much appreciated mate) but I couldn't justify cutting out a small piece so I'll keep it for the day when I collect a kangaroo. I do a lot of night driving in the country so it's inevitable that one day me and a roo will meet.
Here's the panel I made using Josh's front end to form the right contours. Like I said, it would be a shame to cut up the new front end just for this bit.
This is what needed to be fixed.
Here's the panel in place, next step is to weld it in when I can borrow a mig or tig. There's still a lot of surface rust but I'll clean and paint over when all the welding has been done.
Remember this hole in the floor? First step was to cut a piece of cardboard to shape.
them transpose the shape to a piece of metal sheet. It's a BBQ cover but there's a few months before BBQ season and the better half finds out where I got the rust repair panel from.
Panel resting in place ready to be welded.
Next lot of photos after the welding has been done.
Here's my old MK1 that I pulled apart and sold off when I found rust in the body. I so regret getting rid of this car which is why I'm making sure the same doesn't happen to my current MK1.
Cheers

That's not a retro MK1, the picture is 20 years old!
My wife is sitting on the sofa right now reminding me that it was her car, not mine. I just did all the work on it to her specs. That's why it looked so good.1978 MK1 2.0 16v http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...-46488-70.html

How do I find out which motor I've got? I know it's a 1.8 but I don't know much more. Stamping on the block says XJN 008 939* but that's the serial number. There's some more numbers behind the water pump but no letters. Where do I find the letter code for the engine?
On the head it has 93 and below it 026403373G.

On the block, just below the head/head gasket is a flat spot (ie, milled) roughly near cyl 3. This is the engine number, IIRC; the first stamping is actually a VW symbol, followed by two letters and a bunch of numbers.
I suspect that you have a JN.

So I've got a 90hp motor that can run on 91 octane. No wonder it doesn't feel much faster than my Aussie spec MK2 GTI, it has the same engine.
One more thing to modify in the near future although with the price of petrol the ability to use "cheap" 91 octane might be a bonus considering I do 900 ks a week.1978 MK1 2.0 16v http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...-46488-70.html

It does feel quicker and this engine revs better than the MK2 but it's no fire breather. It does go better up hills with 120 kg less to haul around (+ all the weight I'm loosing cycling to work).
Plans are to get around 120 - 125 hp which shouldn't be too hard and should still give me good fuel economy.1978 MK1 2.0 16v http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...-46488-70.html

Yeah, why not. Show everyone why I'm in no hurry to get the Golf on the road when I can get a lift to work in your Audi.1978 MK1 2.0 16v http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...-46488-70.html

The guys from the Canberra VW Owners Club decided my car has been sitting out in the rain for too long, came round with a trailer and took it away.
Here it's parked undercover for the first time in 4 years in valgamesh's (Nick's) carport. The first thing I'm doing when it's registered is dropping it into the weeds.
Stoie (Aaron) already at work.
Cleaning back the metal so Aaron could weld
Welding
The rest of us watching Blitzen fit a short shift kit to his Polo GTI.
All welded in. There's still a long way to go but at least somehing has been done.
Nick's driveway, parked next to Alex G's old DEFDUB. Nick has big plans for his MK2.
Thanks to Aaron, Nick and the other guys for their help.
Much appreciated.
Cheers
