The sound deadener isn't hiding any rot so I'll leave it in place for now. This is a daily driver and I want it to be quiet. I'll rip up the stuff on the firewall so there's no material for any moisture to hide in but I'll replace it with something else to keep it quiet.

Looking good,
I got a leak somewhere and it made the underlay stink really bad!! now the car has alot more road noise..
Considering putting some Dynamat down, but unsure how much it weights and if it would have a negative effect on the car.
Ya pretty lucky there no rust in the support bit, id imagine that would be a pain to fix<space for rent>

If the structural pieces were rusted I'm not sure how I would have taken it. Just cutting up the floor was bad enough.
Had a bit of luck with the next piece that needs fixing. This is the front apron where the front engine mount sits. The rust is so bad it's eaten through both layers. That's the spoiler at the bottom of the picture.
With a bit of luck I'll pick up a new, never used, complete apron this weekend. Then all I need to do is drill out the spotwelds holding the old one in and weld in the new one. Should make the repairs that much easier and bring my sanity level up a notch or two.Last edited by sports racer; 02-05-2011, 11:58 PM.1978 MK1 2.0 16v http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...-46488-70.html

If I had $75 I'd be considering the panels but this car was bought on the cheap and until I win Lotto it will probably be maintained on the cheap.
The car was bought sight unseen and I knew about the rust in the body but nothing about the rust underneath. I don't know how much the previous owner knew but I still think I did OK. Who else is selling a MK1 with a healthy 1.8, 5 speed, sports suspension, extractors, big exhaust, GTI front brakes, 15" mags with near new 195 x 50 x 15 tyres for only $1000. The wheels and tyres alone are almost worth what I paid for the car.
I doubt any $1000 MK1 would be totally rust free, mine just has a bit more than others and has forced me to clean all of it up. I plan on keeping it for quite a few years so all the rust will be cut out. No half arsed repairs here.
After rego I want to replace the sports springs with cut down standard springs so the car sits about 5cm lower than it is now. The reason I want standard springs is once they are cut they will be stiffer than they were but still suit the country roads that I drive on. If I cut down the sports springs that are currently fitted it's going to be too stiff. I'll also fit a rear sway bar, around 24 mm thick, so the handling will be good enough to scare a lot of "sporty" cars.
This is how I used to set up my MK1's years ago when I used to hillclimb. Done properly the Golf should be very predictable through corners and able to be driven right on the limit.
I've got a 97 Polo that I'm wrecking and a lot of the parts should fit the Golf. I'd like to I'll fit the dash together with the entire wiring loom. I might even try to get electric windows working. The brakes on the Polo are 500% better than the Golf's so some of the parts will be moved over, especially the brake booster.
What I want is a car that is old, looks good, goes hard and is heaps of fun and I don't think any other car can fit the bill. I'm really looking forward to modifying this Golf.
Cheers
