Tang - written off

My daughter's 77 GLS got hit by a stolen car on the right hand rear quarter. The impact sheared the axle off its mounting. Although it doesn't look too bad from the outside, I reckon it is beyond my capacity to repair the damage underneath.
As it was a stolen car and the thief was not apprehended, she has no recourse to compensation or insurance.

I am wondering what to do. It would be good if my daughter can get some money for it to go towards purchasing a replacement.

I am wondering if there is a simple way of getting some money for it. Anyone had experience with those businesses that offer cash for wrecks? Or a wrecker they can recommend.

Devastating news Paul. Shame to hear.

I've sent cars to the wreckers before. I'd suggest you wouldn't get more than $100 if they came and picked it up.

My two bob, I'd find another mk 1, that maybe needs a bit of TLC and use all the good bits off Tang, and them pop them into a new shell.

It'll be a matter of weighing up time and money - neither in great supply. Do Mk1 shells in reasonable nick still exist?

Would you like me to take a look at it? There's ways to fix these things.

A re-shell is an option but a new rear beam might do the trick too. Just depends how much energy the rear chassis rails absorbed.

Was it 2 or 4 door? I've got a feeling there's a couple of shells kicking about the traps.

I thought of just replacing the beam, but it looked to me that as well as shearing the mounts the impact shifted the chassis rails. Be happy to get a second opinion though. I'll PM you my details.

If you can crawl under there with a tape measure you might get a feel for how much it's shifted.

That's an idea - the gearbox is very good, as is the engine and clutch

Hey mate, shattering news ofcourse.

Similir happened to mine, however it was the left rear quarter. Every panel shop i went to said it wasnt worthy fixing it as it was such an old car and the work going into it wasnt worth it.
Most likely the reason was because i needed new rear light, new boot, and all the quarter to be knocked out or replaced. One guy actually offered to cut out the whole rear quarter and replace it with a another.

However i did eventually get it fixed, and it was all done by a back yard mate of mine, and it turned out fantastic. Didnt have to replace the boot or anything, just the light. What im trying to say is, if you dont have a friend or family friend in the industry that can help you, its not worth it. As it will be way to xpensive to fix !!

Just to let you know, I have decided not to repair Tang - too many other projects to allow the time and energy to fix it up. In case anyone is after some bits (eg chrome bumpers, good seats & carpet, engine & drive-train) I will take some pics and put up a thread in the parts for sale section before I organise something with a wrecker.

That looks quite repairable.

The door gap is good and the panel damage seems to be confined to the outer lip of the guard.

The beam has moved backwards, depending if it has taken the chassis rail with it, it could just be a matter of replacing the beam and repairing the mounting studs.

To get it back on the road quick I'd concentrate on the rear beam and rough out the guard covering it with a GTI set of flares.

I've got all the bits here to save it.
