  • Reeeeally looking forward to seeing the MK1 in person, even though it isn't to my tastes, just because you've gone all out.

Did that chromed-out MK1 you built just get sold to another Tasmanian? Those Gotti's that I've seen a pic of it with were on that red GTI mock-up that was for sale recently, right? Or is there more than one set of those Gottis in Tassie?!!

I'm still half way through 'renovating' the blue Mk1, so I still have it. I put the Gottis on the Faux GTI before I sold it to a bloke in Sydney. The blue car now has the 14" HTNs that were originally pegged for the white one... if that all makes sense.

          • An update 'story' before I arrive back in Melb tomorrow night (when pics will come too!):

Hit the road for a shakedown yesterday with most things completed, apart from some trim and door glass. General performance of the car is out of this world in terms of general ride, handling, and steering. Some supercars I've driven didn't feel as 'together'. For near on 300hp, though, the engine felt a bit flat with a slight miss at low RPM and a missed beat every few seconds at idle... very likely running rich, I thought, especially after pulling the plugs and finding a bit of fouling. I'd also been pretty conservative with the timing, which does tend to 'flatten-out' an engine.

Anyway, drove a bit further to work a bit more heat through, then stopped to check the state of play as part of good practice... Breather nearly full with oil - ah sh*t.

Topped up the oil and eased it back home. Sure enough, residue in the crank case breather and a sniff test reveals carbon traces in the cooling system - head gasket. F*ck it. So, to cut a long story short, the car is still stuck in Tassie, as I don't have time to fix it until I can get more leave around Easter!! As for the cause of the failure, who knows - hopefully not a bad/cracked head casting, but this is really something my engine builder should have picked up, so it's most likely just a simple gasket job and head overhaul - still a major PITA and more $$, though.

On the upside, the car is absolute weapon, and a short taste of its performance has just made me more desperate to get it finished

            Pics tomorrow night

                  • Such is life really - not a great deal I can do about it. Just a PITA that the car and myself now live in different states, otherwise I'd have sorted it in a couple of days!

I still have to paint inside the doors, fit the side stripes, badges and remaining carbon trim etc, but these pics give some idea of how the car will look when finished. Enjoy

                            • When do we get to see under the bonnet?

Or is it just a 1.6 with a TS carby set-up?
