It Lives!

Just fired up the new motor. Heaps of compression! I haven't driven it yet it got too dark, cold and late to do much else today.

Rattled a bit at first then quietened down, I forgot these things have hydraulic lifters!

I just let it idle for 10 minutes while I checked for leaks and kept an eye on everything.

The throttle is super responsive, the 1600 wouldn't respond to throttle input like this! Just gave it a couple of blips, no lag, no bogging down etc.

All the timing is just set at zero at the moment , I'll have a crack at tuning it tomorrow after I replace the points.

There's two oil pressure switches on the Cordoba motor, one of them is shorted to ground with the engine off (the idiot light switch). The other one is open. I'm hoping it's closed when the pressure is OK so I can use it as a safety for the new electric fuel pump, I'll check it out tomorrow.

Only one water leak, unfortunately it's the heater core I replaced at the same time. Doh! I'll pull that out tomorrow and check it out too.

The pressure switch that is normally open (with 0 pressure) is a high pressure switch designed to only operate over 2000rpm, so I do not think it will suit your purpose.

Thanks Phill, what's it for? Something to do with the single point injection?

I think I've got a spare K-Jet pump relay here somewhere I'll wire up instead.

OK. First drive today, just took it easy. First impressions, much quieter than the 1600 and a lot more torque. Likes to break traction just with throttle at low rpm in first and second on wet road (195/65 G'Grids on 14x6). 1600 seemed to rev a bit easier but this new motor hasn't been tuned yet.

This is going to be a really nice commuter.

There's a definite kick when you floor it and open up the secondary. I was keeping the revs down 'till it's all sorted though.

My new fuel pump is a bit noisy I'll have to grab some anti vibration mounts and move it back under the boot.

Looks like I've still got a bit of a radiator issue, I think I might just have to bite the bullet and lash out on a new one. (Unless a Cordoba one fits)

The heater matrix was leaking from one end cap so I've pulled the cap off and flushed it all out. I'll see if I can get it to seal up with some silastic or something.

I was a little delayed in taking it for a run today because the re-trimmed seats didn't have the seatbelt mount so I had to pull them all apart and change the bases over with the old ones.

Nice, Pete sounds like you had a good weekend too.

You were onto it with the seats. 76 model they came out of with the bolts in the floor.

Glad the motor is fresh in the Golf, the cardy ran bloody well too.

I reckon you could use the cordy radiator if you make some brackets for the fan etc. The cordy hoses may well fit too and are 20 years newer
