  • Spyda's Mk1

I thought i would start a little build thread of my own to show what i have done so far and what i will do in the future to my box.

The story goes something like this. Bought the car about 2years ago. It had a very good body and interior, not perfect but better than most mk1s but the motor had 400,000 ks on it and it was an auto. The car came with a 4door mk1 rust bucket with the fresh SD motor in it and heeps of spare parts in the boot.
Originaly dad bought it because he could and retrimed the seats, put coilovers on and did bits and bobs to get it roadworthy, it passed but we didnt get it registered. All this was done in a couple of weeks so that we could take it to DOVW 2008. After DOVW is kindo just sat around as heeps of other stuff was going on. Early 2009 i crashed my mk2 and needed something to drive so i "bought" the car off dad and this is where it all began.

    Mods so far:

    Interior
    Seats retrimed in swayed
    Electric windows
    Wood trim wheel
Custom speaker pods and door pockets
Custom rear panel cards to house speakers
Custom center console to house headunit
    Timber look boot floor
    Dynamat on front doors

    Sterio (My fav )
    Alpine IVA-D105E Media Station
    Response 6" Kevlar Splits
    Response 6.5" Kevlar Coaxial
    Soundstream T5-12
    Response 1x 1000wrms D-class
    Response 4x 130wrms AB-class
    Optima D34 Yellow top
    100amp Volvo Alternator

    137.2db playing music

    Motor Still in progress
    1.9L SD bottom end
Mk2 head, dunno if its gti but i asume it is, hydro tappers, part number is 053 103 373
    Mk2 GTI gearbox
    High torque extractors
    Webber 32 DATRA 21/100 E9 carbie

    Wheels and Suspension
    BMW e30 BBS 14x6.5
    165/55 r14 Toyo Teo
    24mm Stub axle spacers (rear)
Mk1 GTI brakes on the front
    Ball joint flip kit
    Hottunning Coilovers

    Exterior
    Original 32yr old paint
    Chrome handles
    Chrome side stripes
    Orange 76 antena ball

There is still a way to go. I want to re-do the sterio including:
    newer model response amps
A second 38ah battery in the boot
    0awg instead of 2awg
    Custom voltage meter
    install more dynamat
re-do the boot and door cards

Im shooting for 140db, the problem i had at the sound-off comp was that the tiny 35amp alternator couldnt provide anough juice for the amps.

A respray, new chrome trim and new wheels are on the table aswell.

Building up the sterio, its alot different now.

DOVW 2009, you can see the monster in the boot, its a shame it was playing up on the day

SEDF where it got awarded 2nd best mk1 and won the pimp cup for lowest dub on the day. Better angle of what the 24mm rear spacers in this pic

The SD motor, coming out in 2008.

Started puting it in January 2010 and im still working on it lol. I blame my mate, the panel beater, he took 6weeks to paint the bay and didnt do it 100% but it was free so meh.

So far the motor has been put in and ive got it running.

There are a few things left to do before its back on the road:
            - Fix the choak so that it can idle.

            - Fix the shift linkages. Its converted to 5 speed manual from auto, it was a pain in the arse to get all the bit together and im still missing a 5 speed selector shaft. here is why you need one:
I put it in 2nd by hand and then moved the shifter in to where 2nd should be. The selector shaft cant reach the selector rod as the rod is 5speed and the shaft is a shorter 4speed.

            - Bleed the brakes

            - Fix the extractors as they are touching the steering rack boot and get a new exhaust put on

            - polish off the bloody over spray!

Ill get more, better quality, pics soon.

                Oh, so that's your car!

So fresh and so retro, I love everything about it!

Is that Tartan very thick? The only sort of material I've been able to find locally is so thing it's translucent!

Some seriously nice work there. Top stuff.

                  Cheers mate

The Tartan isnt very thick but i dont think its so thin that its translucent, i mean unless you put it up against the light. Its the same thickness as a school girls skirt . Its all faded now thanks to the summer sun so i will be replacing it. I think my old man got it from spot light, hopefully they still carry it.

Firstly i love how clean everything is, and the engine is really clean!!
Hahaha, i also had problems with the 5th, and i still am experiencing the problem howeveri know how to fix it just too lazy.

Really like what you have done with it, and looks really nice. With that sump you had that low, werent you afraid of cop trouble due to it being less than 100mm? Also with Dynamat on the doors, do you just insert it on the outside, or the inside of the door, OR BOTH?

Do you have a recomendation where the best place to quiten down a golf would be (where abouts in the car doors, boot, wheels arches etc) and the recomendation of what other to use apart from MLV (i think) and dynamat, sound deadener etc... meaning perhaps a bit cheaper?
