    • Man I haven't read much of this thread but if it turns out even nearly as nice as your A3 (which I know isn't finished yet) was at nats then I'm sure I will love it!!! Wish I had your technical skills

Money saved doing your own paint is far better spent on the rest of the car anyway

        • wet sanded and cut the front half and interior.

Getting good results even with such a nongloss friendly color, strange buffing something when the buff and haze almost disapear into the color.

As usual you amaze me with your talents... That roof turned out pretty damn good, it is your first time spraying a whole car? I just got my compressor and first air tools... now for the other expensive tools.... what would you reccommend for sanding the car back? Or would it be easier to get whole thing sandblasted? I have a shop down the road that can do whole cars?

                • Yer first time , but have been painting industrial steel for years but never to a standard near this. Getting the car blasted or dipped would be amazing. I mostly sanded mine, or nylon brush wheeled the tight areas, with a 5 inch orbital and a pneumatic speed file. I didn't bare metal everywhere , mostly but not everywhere.
I think what has really helped me is getting a full solid base , I was trying to get as best finish off the gun so clean up has been reasonably simple. I was a little worried hitting the paint with the buffer ( due to the varied results I've had polishing cars) but the acrylic reactes so well to it.

                  • The acrylic seems to have a lot of depth in that pic, literally looks like thick cream - fantastic.

Funny that about Harvest Moon on the NB Cabrios, that colour had caught my eye before too, well, enough to prompt me to look for it's name. Awesome choice - I don't know why but I had a feeling you would choose a VAG grey (Nimbus or something) but this is better. I find that a lot of VW colours only come in 2K too - the Candy White for the Mk3 onwards are like that too, no alternatives off the paint database or whatever the paint mixers use.

If you find a friendly paintshop, they should mix you any colour you want in acrylic - there's nothing stopping them (except that they don't tend to care about non-trade customers!).

The only thing with going this way is that you need to buy up a large amount, as they'll never get the colour match the same if you need more later.

I have 4L of Candy White in Lucite 400 downstairs! Was mixed up for my Mk3 with no questions asked
