south africa got the 4 door gti, came out in 83 and i owned a 84. k jet tronic fuel injected with a g grind camshaft and tri y header if the spelling is correct. the 83 model had the 3 gauges in the center console and the 84 model got the computer in between the clocks.

That is correct. 2 years of 4dr MK1 GTI goodness.

Also, South Africa never got the 2 door GTIs, only the 4 doorr models.

All I can find is "hear say".

I don't doubt that they would have built a prototype, but I think thats as far as it went.

Looking at the one Gordan posted up, its still missing the grill trim, GTI stripes, the side mould blackouts, door handle blackouts & blacked out roof lining.

It does have the widened GTI steelies, GTI A-piller trims & appears to have the tarten interior material too.

Might have to leave it as "unknown" I reckon
The the mk1 GTI's that were released in South Africa came in both 2 and 4door, infact in this side of the world 2doors are really hard to come by...

Incorrect, the 2 door was named GT and the 4 door GTI, we never got the MK1 GTI in 4 door, there are however 2 door GTI's imported from the U.K in South Africa. See attached pic of a Mk1 GT
