  • Mk1 4 dr GTI????

    Got you! haha

I think its a GTI Engineering built 4dr GTI. Still pretty cool too I reckon

Would be a nice car to cruise in. Especially if it had 240+hp!

I also dug up some info that GTI engineering use to have as an option of a long range fuel tank which sat in the spare wheel well!

Now get this! It ave you an extra 9 gallons (approx 40L)! It used the standard fuel filler neck & standard fuel level sender through the stock fuel tank!

Thats a fuel capacity of a VN Calais 5L. 80L!

I'll try & dig up some pics of this option.

        Agreed! haha

Its pretty hard to keep a car that mint for that long I reckon. Especially under the bonnet & in those type of conditions too!

Finally found a pic of the long range fuel tank option

Couldn't find it in my GTI Engineering Catalog either!

Might have to keep on searching for the extended GTI Engineering version one to add to the rest of the collection of sought after Catalogs.

the tank looks like a relatively simple concept. After last weekend in the high country someone should develop something like this for the Polo. Those things really dont seem to have much range

The engine sounds pretty much like the spec of your old 8V beater engine Tim!

I'm still not 100% sure on if the factory ever produced a 4dr version of the Mk1 GTI.

All I can find is "hear say".

I don't doubt that they would have built a prototype, but I think thats as far as it went.

Looking at the one Gordan posted up, its still missing the grill trim, GTI stripes, the side mould blackouts, door handle blackouts & blacked out roof lining.

It does have the widened GTI steelies, GTI A-piller trims & appears to have the tarten interior material too.

Might have to leave it as "unknown" I reckon

Yeah, it sounds like a good idea, but I'm not sure on the engineering legality side of it.

From memory you can't fit a fuel tank into the cabin unless it was fitted from factory.

But I'm pretty confident there wasn't any hatch built fitted with a fuel tank inside the passenger compartment.

Of all the cars I know of that had fuel tanks fitted inside their boots, the boot was separated by a parcel shelf, seat or body panels incl. Mini, Escort, Mazda, Audi etc.

                  Yeah, i noticed that too.

I think it might be a GLi.

But like you said, its unknown.

                      Yeah true.

They're writing about there engine upgrades. I can't find a 100% complete catalog, but I'll keep an eye out.

I still reckon mine would have flogged these upgrades though!

Its all about the fueling & intake side of things I reckon!

All I can find is this stuff.

Not in order & all over place. Hopefully you can get a kick out of it though!

                      Some Oettinger stuff too!

I once owned in Oz a 1983 model 4 door, badged as a GLI with 8v Kjet GTI Engine black headlining, Big Taillights and GTI interior, but 4 door.

It came to me with a buggered motor. It had a twin downpipe as standard, so I whacked a 16v in it and sold it to Canberra.

I reckon it was a factory one as it was too good to be a faker.

The french got a 16v mk1 gti from the factory so i dont see why they wouldnt have made a 5door gti from the factory.

On my search a while ago for more info on the GLI i did come across some info on 5door gtis. IIRC they where only made and sold in germany and there wernt that many because no one really wanted a 4door. Dont quote me on it coz i dont remember where i read it.

The GLI we have is relay odd. It has a 1.6 GTI kjet motor with an auto gear box. Standard seats and white roof lining but everything else is gti and does not match the 1979 build. The dash, door cards, boot, big tail lights, arch flairs, trim, engine, sunroof etc etc are all suposta be avaliable from 80s onward but some how all came standard on the GLI.

those mk1 16v's were build by oettinger, not exactly volkswagen but VW france did contract them for the mk1 runout model
