Changing the rear muffler will only change the sound of the drone. I found that out the hard way on the Thunderbird i had and a friend's Civic. You'll need to add a resonator somewhere towards the middle. Not sure if the exhaust on an Mk1 is similar routing to the mk2 (I'm guessing it is as an Mk6 has a similar routing to a mk2) then you can add a small resonator in front of the axle.

By Local do you mean the Blue Mountains?
A good friend of mine had a family friend in Penrith who owned an exhaust shop and did excellent work. I don't know if he's still around but he was just near the Westbus on Mulgoa road. Cobra exhausts or something like that.
