  • which 5 speed for a GLD.

Hi guys,. I'm looking at getting a 5 speed for my GLD, but I'm not sure which box and ratios would be ideal.

    By my thinking:
a 4T (longest ratio) would have the car sit at low rpm at freeway speeds, but be a little bit sluggish around town, cause of the longer gearing.

oposite of that would be a close ratio box (GTI boxs') will still sit at reasonably high rpm at 100, but the closer ratios would make it zippier around town.

Ideally, a close ratio 5 speed GTI box with a 5th gear swap (for a .71 as opposed to a .89) would be ideal. An FO, FN, FH, FJ, FF has this 4+E (overdrive) 'feature' standard.

Comments? thoughts? and what about mk 3 boxes, what codes do they have?

I was talking about this to my old man the other day. He said the corrado g60 had close ratio gears but the 5th gear was a over drive gear, this was standard.

Might want to hunt one of them down.

Take a look at the codes here

From memory I've got an AEN in white and an FF in red as well as a 4K from Stu and a CHB from a Cordoba, just to give you an idea of what's out there.

FF would be nice, or a 4K with a 5th gear swap.

what effect does the final drive have on the gearing,. ie high hte final drive the shorter or longer the gearing? It's lower the final drive the longer (and lower revving at speed) the gearing is. isn't it?

Yes, that's right. The smaller the R&P ratio the taller the Final Drive ratio.

I'll build my race boxes with 3.94 R&Ps and the close ratio stack - same spec as 4K box. Lots of acceleration to pull out of the corners and hopefully just enough gearing to be hitting redline in 5th at the end of the straight.

            BEst economy 5th would be 0.71 with a 3.64 R&P.

The MK1 Caddys had a really low (high number) diff ratio of about 4.25 to be able to haul heavy loads.

You can change the 5th gear without pulling the box to bits, it can even be attempted in the car. (although I think it would be a bit tight in a MK1 to try this.)

We are sorry, but this page cannot be found. If you have any questions or can't find what you are looking for, please contact us .

Bildon lists R&P sets right down (up) as low as 5.07! I'm guessing that would only be used for drags of if you're running that hyabusa conversion.

Also check out Broke's site for a lot of detail on the ratios and boxes.

Yeah, I've seen those gear swaps from Autotech. I have a feeling if I started doing one of them, it's going to end up costing alot more than I want it too.

An FF box would be ideal, since the ratios are the same as a 4 speed (1-4 obviously) and 5th will sit on about 73MPH at 3000 rpm. which should see it hum along at 60-65 (100 kph) An 4T box will sit on even lower rpm (but only slightly) at 100, but I'm afraid it'll be too sluggish driving around town. (which is where a close ratio would be nice)

I have this awesome bit of paper that has codes, ratios, clutch sizes, DS flange sizes etc.

Will scan it up and post it here, doesn't cover every 5speed as it has nothing on the AUG box which came in our mk2 gti's for example but has a good mix.

Funnily enough I was just about to ask if anyone knew what code mk 2 gti's had!

That is what mine had, not sure they came with everyones though. That would sit at 3000rpm @ 100kmph. I was running 15's but I thin my rolling diameter was still the same.

                        image as promised.

As far as I am aware my Mk1 GLD had the stock GTI 5 speed in it and it was great to drive. Never had an issue on the freeway that I recall, it handled it all nicely.

The only thing I did notice was something behind the shifter console would get pretty warm on long trips, otherwise was great.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Probably just the floor from the exhaust.

A CHB gearbox from a cordoba is perfect in our 1.5D. First and second are taller, third and fourth are almost the same and fifth is overdrive. Does about 2900 at 100 in fifth and will accelerate from about 70 on a level road nicely in that gear. Anything taller would be less unuseable in a 1.5D (our car has a strong motor and decent 2" exhaust system).

You will need the sandwich plate from the cordoba and either source a pair of 90mm flanges or mod your drive shafts to accept the cordoba 100mm inner cv joints.
