  • New project Mk1 - QLD

    Hey everyone!!!

This is the latest addition to our garage, we now have a 1997 subaru wrx (our race car), a 2001 VW Golf GTI (our luxury car) and finally a 1977 3 door VW Mk1 GLS (daily driver)

So just a few pics to begin with and will do an update on the progress so far,
We have a few minor mods so far since it arrived but will update it as the building begins, keeping in mind that we arent aiming for a show car but a tidy phat daily driver.

    It arrived like this....

Some have you may recognise it, was from geelong victoria.
Mods that have been uncovered so far are,

SEAT 1.8 litre engine with a downdraft weber carby
bilstein suspension with what looks to be pedders or h&r coils
    Rear swaybar,
    Front underbody bracing,
Front and rear strut braces (front is a dodgy home made job)
    15x7 rims
battery relocated to the boot for weight distribution
    chrome bumpers
2 inch exhaust, not sure what brand extractors.

First thing we had to do was to freshen up the engine and all new fluids, plugs, new brake pads and discs, wipers, new head unit and 6x9s and a few other bits n pieces.

    stay tuned...

And yes that was a seat belt we removed from the bonnet, apparently its a victorian rule if you are going to race a car....?

After that we sourced some more parts,
5 standard vw mk1 rims with tyres,
      Brake switch
      Chrome window winders
      Small front lip
      Suspension top hat
rear brackets to remove tow bar mounts
      engine damper with bushing

      As it stands now,

      Future plans,
Looking at new wheels now, anyone that has anything forsale shoot me a pm.
Have a few ideas but also open for suggestions,
Painting it a deep gloss white, lowering (ALOT!)
Have taken it for small drive and it goes great, was expecting alot worse, any tips on how to tune these little 1.8 engines and get even more grunt would be much appreciated. i assume they removed the ignition system and put a carby setup on for ease of setup.

      Cheers Loki and Leah

              Nice..

Good to see a nice looking MK 1 getting the treatment...

              Wheel sets I have :-

              Steelies , round hole and ovalish holes. 14 x 6 ?
              Std factory 80 GTI alloys 13 x 5.5
              std factory mid 80 alloys 14 x 5.5 ( bit rough)
2 different sets of some 13 x 5 local alloys

Lemme know if ya want pics.
              Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

              Cheers,
              Grant...

Yeh we are very excited to get it slammed and put some nice big 15x7 - 15x8 wheels under it!
Chasing a mesh set with a bit of dish like the bbs rs but dont want to pay an arm and a leg!
A couple of old workshops i know of seem to specialise in wheels and may be able to get a cheap set of hotwires or something a bit nicer under it until we track down the perfect wheel for it!

I have successfully modified the back gate of our house so that i can now fit the mk1 out the back of the house rather than having it sit out the front. Bit of a shame not having a garage to put the little beauty in, especially after we finish the paint job!

Great to hear the good feedback and it will be getting rwc this weekend, will let u know how it goes!

So the car passed roadworthy with flying colours!!!
While i was out getting roadworthy i noticed a set of gti flares on a rusting gld golf sitting in the yard of the mechanics workshop, i managed to pick them up for $70, and also today picked up a set of lightweight 15x7 genuine remotec wheels (made in germany), now to chase tyres!

Wheels - are going to be powdercoated black or some other crazy colour the polished lip and center cap!

Will post up some more pics tomorrow when i begin the cleaning of the guards and fitting them (unsure if i am going to keep them on after we paint it but am putting them on for fun until we paint it!)

                          Cheers loki
