Was given this article from Friday's Fin Review - "Unsuspecting rivals hit for straight six" re- the BMW 130i.

It has this to say about Mk1 Golf GTIs:

The article makes sense, it's called progress.

At the end of the day you buy a mk1 GTI or a mk5 GTI for two very different reasons, same goes for any old or new cars.

besides, mk1 GTI's are way cooler and power to weight is king (very biased opinion)

I tend to agree. I'd have a mk 1 GTI over a mk 5 GTI anyday.

I find it outrageously funny how alittle the Aussie Press actually know's about the original's of the GTI. I don't even reckon any of them have actually seen one or driven one!

I remember reading an article about the release of the current R32 & they said is can trace it's bloodlines back to the original hot hatch. The mk2 which is regarded as a collector's item because they only brought in 200 odd! hahahahahahaah

Real collector's car! They sell for about $5K+ haha.


Anyway, back on topic, I've got a original VW video here about the release of the original GTI back in 76 & then they move on up to when they were finally introduced into the UK as a RHD in 79.

Awesome video too!

They said the car was that rapid & extremely easy to drive for it's day, that when it was first released, they didn't even have a class to put it in. It blitzed everything in it path!

So what did they class it up against?

Current supercar's of that time, being Ferarri, Lamborgini etc.!
Suprisingly on a tight race track & windy road, it wasn't too far off the pace. The journo's were absolutely god smacked!

Well I have a Mk1 GTI and I don't have a newer car.
Apparently when new it could do 0-100 in just over 8 seconds - which is slower than a Mk5 GTI (but may be quicker than a corolla). It depreciates slower too.

Horses for courses they say. On a winding road I feel no need for a newer car, but driving up to Kyneton tomorrow in +37 degrees may have me thinking that Air-con is worth a couple of thousand.

which in itself is enough reason to keep loving them... oh and james may too!

i think its astonishing that a car 30 years younger than the mk1 gti and built ontop of all the experience and knowledge gained from producing the most popular small car of all time should actually be a whole second faster to 100km/h and be more luxurious at hte same time! why, it must be some kind of miracle!

OHHHHH! maybe they've only driven aussie cars, which seem to keep getting WORSE!

Suppose it's true-but for body dynamics, weight distribution, lack of weight and raw driving fun- you can't go past a Mk1 now can you?
