Re the inaccurate speedo - has anyone checked by GPS the accuracy of their (Yeti) odometer.
Our Pug's speedometer is out/over by the 'standard' 5kph but the odometer is extremely accurate.
A couple of weeks ago I drove to Melbourne and back in my new (had 800km on the clock when I left) Golf Mk7 Tdi. I got 5.6 going down and 5.7 coming back (MFD). It was raining in Vic on the return, and was house to house so some slower driving at each end. I drove on cruise all the way using +5kph on the speedo/MFD. I had determined the 5kph error earlier using sat nav. Also confirmed the error on the return journey by timing two 5km stretches. Is this ok for a new/tight engine or should I have got better economy?
You really shouldn't use cruise control on a new engine. You shouldn't be driving for economy either. You're supposed to vary the revs & try & load the engine

Which way did you go, Hume or Monaro / Princes?
We drove up to the NSW/ACT border (Colinton) on the Easter weekend (in a 2006/7 125kw Passat.)
We headed up on the Princes and Monaro HWYs, at one point we had an avg consumption around 4.9 and looked to be on track for just over 1300kms from the tank... Then we hit the mountains lol.
When we finally fuelled up in Canberra we had done ~1050kms and had 60kms DTE. i think I put in around ~55L soooo roughly 5.3avg.
Thats without a lot of the city driving aka avg killing aka diesel wastage you'd have enjoyed.
On a side note, what's this vent thing you guys are talking about? I've never seen an extra button next to my filler cap (not that I've looked that hard, not that I'm going to now either as its raining lol)

Reason: premature posting
I went on a google run later that night looking for info, both tdiclub and vwvortex yeilded some divided and highly flammable debate on the issue.
I can see how it would be beneficial, but given how good the range / economy on our cars is all Capitol cities on the east coast are less than a tank of fuel away from their neighbour. So I'm a little unsure of just how useful it'd be for me.
Driving the outback or Perth or far north QLD however, I can see the benefits.
You have to love this economy from the Golf Bluemotion;
The highlighted entry was the result of a trip from Modbury to Terowie, Peterborough, Yatina, Port Pirie, Virginia & home. Then 2 trips from Modbury to Port Adelaide on two separate days.
My petrol burning 308 has averaged 20/km/L (5L/100km) for its 11500km life but 95 is ~ 25 c higher than diesel so my Yeti is about the same in c/km terms.
It's v odd that the reason given in the past for diesel being more expensive than petrol was that Asian demand influenced the Tapis price, so what's happened recently to alter that situation?

Use of cruise control is not recommended until 8000kms.

Cruise control + rain = insanity
cruise control + new engine = not recommended
Trying for economy + new engine = not recommended

It rarely 'rains' in Vic, compared to Sydney, more like drizzle.
On the occasions I've been in Victoria it didn't seem to matter if the rain was heavy or light, you still got standing water on the roads - especially those 1960s concrete roads
