Just did a 973 km trip from north of Brisbane to Coffs and return In my Passat 125TDI wagon 2 people light luggage.
Was full to the top when I left and filled it to identical level on return.
Did 90% of trip using adaptive cruise set at 1k (actual) under the limit of the zone I was in.
Lots and lots of roadworks so average speed coming home was 81kph.
Consumption overall was 5.561 L per 100km. Used 54.13L
I did a modest 450km round trip to seymour/avenel area and was fascinated to see the fuel gauge needle 'stop' just short of half full for ~50km as if it had got stuck then it plunged to reality....oh well, still not bad seeing its only just passed 1000km and a long way to go to be fully run in. The Yeti is not the slipperiest vehicle with a CD of .37 plus frontal area and it shows just how economical it can be at slower speeds.
On delivery the tyres had 46psi all round but dropped them to front 40 rear 36 (2 up).
Back in Oct. I bought an '09 Tiguan in Brisbane. On the way home to Adelaide, must be over 2000km, I consistently saw 5.3 km/100km.Average. This included the winding hills climb from Port Macquarie to Walcha. [lots of 2nd. & 3rd. gear work]. I travelled at the speed limit & with cruise control on where I could. The worst leg was from West Wyalong back to Adelaide [1000km] on the last day. It was a horrible day, strong head wind & A/C running continuously, higher speed limit in SA, where the average was 5.7. I was amazed, not sure if my Mk5 would do any better.
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

Yesterday morning I calc'd the first tank in my Allroad - 8.06l/100km. The MFD was a bit pessimistic at 8.5l/100km, so thats kind of nice to know.
Not bad for a VE pump TDI pulling 2 tonnes of quattro I reckon
This has got me feeling better about choosing to search for a TDI allroad over the premium ULP version. Even though it's a big power loss, the quoted economy of the 2.7tt is pretty bad.... From all reports the 4.2l V8 is better on the juice.
My Polo managed to win the Fiat Club/Bits of Italy Economy run yesterday using 3.99l over the 116km course (according to Google Maps - the Polo found it to be 119km)
Averaged 14.0 l/100km (MFD reading) during a 130km drive this afternoon
The was over the 33 laps I did for my stint in the Winton 6 hour Relay Race (probably would have been closer to 15 l/100km if it wasn't for the 3 laps behind the safety car ).

I came close three weeks ago, closer than I thought, when I refilled at BP Peak Downs and took 54.51L on the pump, after filling in Chinchilla, I nearly passed out. I think I might have been a litre or two short at Chinchilla. Try not to run out, from what I have read here and 40 years of anecdotal accounts it isn't worth the hassle.
I've added 56L and the DTE hadn't gone into -- mode yet. I'm assuming the pump was inaccurate or the fuel tank is a fraction bigger than VW make out.
All you diesel guys should either be able to burp the tank (button next to the filler) or modify the vent system up near the fuel filler to accept a few more litres if you are going on a long run in the sticks.
carandimage The place where Off-Topic is On-Topic I used to think I was anal-retentive until I started getting involved in car forums
A couple of weeks ago I drove to Melbourne and back in my new (had 800km on the clock when I left) Golf Mk7 Tdi. I got 5.6 going down and 5.7 coming back (MFD). It was raining in Vic on the return, and was house to house so some slower driving at each end. I drove on cruise all the way using +5kph on the speedo/MFD. I had determined the 5kph error earlier using sat nav. Also confirmed the error on the return journey by timing two 5km stretches. Is this ok for a new/tight engine or should I have got better economy?
Also agree with the MFD being 10% optimistic with our Polo and Yeti and that's running fairly high tyre pressures. Long-term we go improvements of about 0.5L/100km. Took 20,000 in common rail Yeti. Seemed a lot slower to improve in PD Polo - presume to do with higher compression?
Long-term recent average about 7.3L/100km in our 2.0TDI. Haven't done a long drive for a while, but maybe less than 5L/100km highway on MFD.
