Gotta love Tdi economy

    Worst Highway tank (loaded + 3 fat aussies, 646km) …... 7.74L/100km - Wentworth to Broken Hill and return ( at 11,000km).

    Best Highway tank (legal speed, 1 fat aussie, 588km) .... 5.1L/100km - Brisbane to Chinchilla and return. ( at 34,000km).

    Best City tank ….... I don't care, but it is pretty good I'm sure.

    The onboard trip computer thingy is always very optimistic, mine reads about 10% “nicer” all the time. The Climatronic is never off, I start the car from cold, buckle up and drive away, doing nothing drastic till at least the coolant has heated up. I have had 6 “fast idles” (DPF I assume ) during the above 15 month period, so that always means a blast down the motorway in fifth to fix the problem.
    Run in was trying to stay alive for the first 100kms or so (new car syndrome) and after that it was go for it, make every hill a winner etc, till 5300 km when I went for a cruise to South Australia running at legal speeds only. It is a very good little road runner.
    I think I have been lucky and got a good one (touch wood – maintain servicing) it is definitely a sweet car to drive.
    Picked up my GTD on the 18/11/2011

    Track each tank using the FuelLog app on my phone. 54 fills so far.

    Overall distance since new is 42300km

    Overall consumption is 6.24 L/100km

    Best tank was 5.62 L/100km

    Worst tank was 7.09 L/100km

    Mostly driving around the suburbs. The best tank was obtained on a drive to Shepparton and back, but that only used half a tank, the rest was the usual around town.

    One day I'll do a full tank economy run, just to see what I can get.

      They do so many bloody k's on a tank it's difficult to get a clean run for an entire tank - my missus tends to drive quite differently to me (and does a lot more congested city driving). It's incredible what a difference taking off gently from a standstill can make to econ aroudn town - but unfortunately there's nowhere near as much fun in that as capitalising on a nicely remapped TDI!

      My Adelaide run was the cleanest tankful or two I've had - did the calc on that and my indic 5.3 was actually 6.1 ... so MFD is out by plenty. If I sat dead on 100kph actual, I would expect the 5.3 to be actual.

      Dead right about the 80kph cruising in the Octy TDI.

      • I got the MFD to read 14.1 l/100km on Sunday.

        Mind you, this was as I lifted off after the chequered flag of a track session with the MFD being reset as I left the pits

        Right now, the car thinks it's making diesel (projected range keeps increasing) as the MFD tries to make sense of things with me going back to normal puttering about.

        BTW, my other runs are not 'clean' but normal suburban (with a bit of inner city) start/stop.

          The quattro system in the allroad is passive and full time - the haldex is active and only diverts torque to the rear when slippage is detected (under normal circumstances) - so thats why I can only get 7.5l/100km :-P... well that and the extra 500cc and 2 cylinders

          Brad - I will start a thread in due course... just haven't really done anything on it yet other than clean it, fix little trim things and take it out to the booneys for some fun I have however started doing an exhaust bits stocktake.... I think twin 2.5" pipes are in order.

            There you go - showing my gross ignorance There's an Allroad living at the end of our street - body-wise it looks very similar to the Scout. I thought it was a 2.4 and assumed that would mean 4 cyl. A 2.5 V6 TDI must be particularly funful to drive with gusto - I reckon the 'lowly' remapped 103 TDI is pretty damn spritely!

            My running gear is pretty much VW Tig (I think ... but someone will no doubt howl me down ). On the Laverda (Italian moto) forum, I'm far more knowledgable!

                Owners have long since smartened up and ditched the orig ignition & charging systems on 3 cyl Laverdas - there are some simple and effective upgrades.

                I'm a 750 twin man myself. I raced a 1200 triple (for the WA Laverda concessionaire I worked for) in the 1978 Castrol 4hr Prod race in Perth and have posted 1 sec quicker lap times on my well sorted and slightly modded 750. Also had bullet-proof elecs (courtesy of old Bosch 12v VW-style genny and reg!). Never had an elec problem in hundreds of thousands of miles (it was a '73, came with mph speedo!).

                The Laverda forum is an absolute goldmine of info - decades of expertise on offer - bit like this one.

                    I had 2 weeks where I had both the Allroad and the Octavia in my possession and size wise they are really similar, despite the C5 allroad being based on the A6 (VAG C platform) whereas the Octavia is based on the 'golf' A platform. The Allroad only has en extra 50mm between the armrests in the back seat, but it has an extra 140mm boot width and 200mm boot length, with about 100mm less depth. More rear legroom and more room in the front.

                    But yeah, underneath they are totally different beasts. The C platform has 'proper' suspension - duel wishbone front and rear etc, and the isolation from the body is much better - heaps less noise, vibration and harshness than the A5 platform cars. I still miss the Octy for the sportyness of its cornering though.

                    The 2.5 is so nice, its the smoothest diesel I've driven by far (in terms of actual engine balance - better even than the CR diesels) and its a powerhouse even though its stock. But the auto lets it down a bit.... not a dealbreaker for me, but if it ever blows up, it will be getting a manual conversion.

                    • The 6 speed box would certainly fit very nicely with a donk like that - so glad I have a manual. Interesting to read the diffs b/w the 'similar' VAG beasts - I guess they can't charge all that extra dough for nothin'!

                      Had 4.7/100 showing on the MFD (maybe 5.2 actual?) today after mostly fwy run from Mornington Peminsula to Preston (Vic). Predicted range was 1150 with 50km already covered on 55L full tank! Last tank was one of our worst - all short city trips, 560km on 50L ... YIKES! They do like cruising, even very fast, econ is still good.

                          I'd love to do that - be good to have accurate data (you in Melbourne? ). Have contemplated buying a unit, but don't see myself using it enough.

                          What level VCDS is adequate for a reasonably savvy owner on a steep learning curve, BTW Brad? Have seen about 3 levels and prices to suit.

                            I have the micro-can IIRC. It plugs into the USB. I have no idea where it fits in the price spectrum as a mate gave it to me for nix.

                            • I'm really intrigued by stated preferences for BP diesel , Moreys additives etc. Is there any scientific evidence to support claims of superior performance or preventative maintenance or is a 'belief' thing?

                                I would have sworn by BP Ultimate Diesel, but now that I'm on Stage 2 w/ DPF delete (claimed 170kW/450Nm, yet to dyno) and its settled, I'm doing some testing of different fuels.
                                Woolies Caltex Vortex Premium seems okay, bit sluggish though - but it was sluggish on stock tune too.
