      Yeah I figured it was possible, wanted to get down there and check for old belt residue and clean out a bunch of metal pieces from the old pulley going bang though.

          Some of the kits on the net include the Torx bit for working on other cars. While working on mine during the inspection I tried a long 10mm XZN/multispline that I already had in my toolbox. I only had to order the 33 tooth one, from memory around $8 including postage from China, bargain.
          Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

            During my inspection, I removed the wheel & inner liner as VW suggests & thought afterwards that it could all be done from the top. The only problem I could see is to make sure the multirib belt was in the correct position on the lower pulley[bit hard to see] but certainly doable.
            Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

              Just to clarify, there is only one female spline as part of the pulley assembly. You are correct with the rest of your instructions as is asa572.

                Whenever I've done an alternator, I've not taken wheels, etc off. You can usually get everything out from up top.

                But in this case, if you've got a mess to clean up then yeah, no harm in being thorough.
