  • 103TDI turbo whistle

Hi All, our Octavia has developed a faint but definite turbo whistle. It comes on just after pressing the accellerator along with the boost (torque) but then wains even though the torque remains. as the revs rise it seems to come on again. Its only slightly but distinctively louder than it was before (distinctive enough for my wife to notice..!)

Any ideas on what this could be?

    Cheers

errr no, but you look like a candidate for a 'call up' which might fix it anyway.

If it's in the recall I'd wait and see what happens.

Boost leak I reckon, the intercooler connectors are notorious for it, but even the slightest leak somewhere will give you that sort of noise.

I've got that slight whistle on my Passat, I just thought it was the turbo spooling.

the intercooler connections must leak a bit as there is some oil wetness around two of them. is it simply a matter of replacing an oring to reinstate the seal?

Occy was built Jan 09 and is apparently not affected by dieselgate....

"Dear customer! The vehicle with this VIN code is not affected.
Please enjoy your ŠKODA." (and its whistle)

Leaking is also normal, and new o-rings donlt do anything as the connection is poor to start with, even the Porsche's suffer from it. You can simply ignore it, as it;s no big deal, but if like me you want that last kw, then undo the clip ( note how and where it sits as you have to get it exactly right to save dropping a hose on the road ) clean up the connections with some degreaser and prepsol / metho etc, and silastic them together.

Afraid other than that, you will have to live with it. Point it out next service, maybe they have a dealer fix too.

I had the clamp come loose off the exhaust outlet of the turbo whilst at a track day in Brisbane.
Quick trip to Jmac's workshop and a new bolt fixed it straight away.
                        Sounded great though!

Why can't you buy a 'bug' that transmits on a car radio frequency the sound of the exhaust at the outlet?

My trick is to pull it apart like greg has said, clean it, and then lube the o ring with petroleum jelly. It will swell a bit once you put it back together (takes hours) and might seal better (for a while).
