  • Engine warning light.

    Hi Guys,

Today while driving the engine light appeared on the dash and hasn't extinguished since.
The car starts normally and drives normal as well.
Now I am a bit concerned driving the oil burner and the dealer can not fit me in to have it checked until 8 July.

Any recommendations where I could have it looked at sooner? What it could be?
It is a Golf Mk5 TDi Pacific MY2008 and has always been filled up with BP Premium Diesel

It could be anything, I had the engine light come on once, I had it scanned. One of my coil packs went and had to be replaced. The engine light could mean a few things.

The culprit was the EGR Valve and Throttle Flap.
              Replaced and all good now.

Was advised to give the TDi a good flogging on the freeway from time to time due to mainly city stop/start driving.

That will help with the turbo's VVN and won't do anything for your throttle flap or the EGR - you need the oil catch can (Provent200).

Exactly what I'd have thought......lots of 'blow-by' oily gases to be dealt with at speed under load.

Maybe I didn't explain it correctly. Is the flogging of the engine related to keeping the catalytic converter free from clogging up? That is probably what they meant when I was told about flogging it.

Btw, where can I have a Provent 200 installed and at what cost?

The EGR and Flap cost me about $1400 supplied and installed at Muller and Muller at Lakemba.

The flogging is to keep the turbocharger vanes from getting jammed with buildup of soot.

$1400?? Good grief! I have the same light on - a VCDS scan by a very helpful forum member gave a TPS inconsistent reading code so I was fearing this would be the cause. At least I know what to expect
Meanwhile, the car runs just fine.

EGR flap can be had from ebay uk for about $150 used, and darkside developments have them too from memory. Dead easy to swap out.
