  • Picking up GTD Friday. Anything I should pay particular attention to?

    Hi all,

Wife is picking up MY12.5 GTD on Friday, has done about 55,000K's. Looks good & we are getting a pre-purchase inspection but I want to make sure everything is checked properly (I won;t be there & haven't see/driven car). So far, my list of things to check includes:

    - Any evidence of accidents, chassis true and damage free, etc?
    - DSG looks/drives OK?
    - Service history (in booklet) look up to date?
    - Can he check service manual to see if DSG has been serviced?
    - Any signs of excessive oil use?
    - Does DPF look OK? Possible to have a look at the reading? Should be OK given k’s, but just wondering.
    - Tyre treads OK?
    - Possible to tell when cambelt will need a change (assume 100K's)?

Anything I am missing & should get wife/mechanic (not the same person) to look for?

We understand the 60K major service is coming. Hoping to hell it checks out OK.

    Thanks guys.

Apart from the usual 2nd hand car things, unless you already have significant experience with VW diesels is unlikely your going to notice anything untoward.

With 55k km on the clock it should really look and drive like new unless its been abused and neglected.

The thing about VW diesels is that if they have been maintained well enough, they tend to keep running very well even after many km. The mk5 TDI I just bought with 254,000km sounds and drives really really well. Its got worn components in the suspension/steering/body as I would expect, but the drivetrain itself, as is typical, shows no real signs of wear.

Cam belt is every 4 years, or 90 or 100 kms. I cant quite remember as I never get enough before the 4 years comes up.

DPF is neither here nor there. If it is about due for a regen, it wont mean much, provided it is not in limp mode.

Service history is number 1. You want the fullog book stamps
      2001 - A4 B6 1.8T Sedan Manual - (sold @ 254,000km)
      2008 - A3 8P 1.9tdi Sportback Manual - (sold 90,000kms)

      2013 - Octavia RS wagon - 1z - Race Blue - TDI - 6M - Leather - MDI - Whispbar S44W - LED interior kit - RVC forward?/retrofit - Mk3 gear shifter
      2021 - Q3 S-Line wagon - F3 - Daytona Grey - Westfalia towbar - no other options available.

DSG service due at 60,000 clicks, timing belt at 105,000 clicks according to my VW service sheet. The 60,000 service plus DSG service will set you back somewhere in the $1,000+ ballpark if done with a dealer. It's not an arm or a leg, just feels like it at the time. Happy motoring.

Timing belt is 7yr/105,000km. Down from 8yr/120,000km.

The only other thing to watch out for is the smile on your face after you get slapped with torque!
