  • Hi Guys,

Slightly off topic, but I spent quite some time trying to find a suitable bottle with a longer nozzle to decant a tank shot of Moreys Smoke killer into, found sewing machine oil is at the correct 100mL. I just load this up after each tank full, and then adding the right amount at the bowser is both very quick a piece of cake.

    • Shouldn't that be in Transporter's "official" diesel additives thread?

        • That one is a bit small for adding 2T at 1:200 but would work for petrol engines using 1:600
This is the sort I use. This one is empty but the level shows clearly with oil in it and it lasts for about 4 fills before it needs topping up.

          • I use a 300ml water bottle with 50ml markings that I put on the side (I weighed the bottle as I added water to make sure it was pretty accurate). I carry a 1 litre oil bottle of 2 stroke that I pour into the (ex)water bottle to suit the amount of fuel that I estimate I'll be filling.

            • What 2SO are people buying and from where? My understanding so far is I need to find the cheapest bulk amount of semi synthetic TC-W3. Also, has anyone considered some kind of blend of 2SO and Moreys or is that just over the top?

You should use MINERAL 2SO. Semi Synthetic and fully synthetic may not blend with diesel completely. I use Castrol Activ 2T. It should be rated JASO FC.

I would not use both 2SO and Moreys simultaneously as you don't know how they will interact.

                • I've used a semi synthetic 2 stroke oil (Motul 800) in the past with no separation issues - even premixed in a jerry can. I've read of issues with some fully synthetic oils but I think the suggestion that full mineral oil is absolutely required is a bit strong.

I'd be very interested in how Morey's Smoke Killer and 2 stroke oil interact but I'm happy enough with just 2 stroke oil that I don't feel the need to go out and buy some MSK. I would expect them to behave very similarly in a mix to just upping the dose of either one alone.

I'm using Shell Nautilus TC-W3 as I bought a lot cheaply when Shell were changing their packaging but I'd be happy to try the Gulf Western TC-W3 that sells a good price at auto stores like Supercheap

2-Stroke Oil In Diesel – A Technical Study

                    • Interesting.

I wonder if the TCW-3 oil I use avoids the fouling issue since this spec requires no metallic ash to be produced.
I also think the injector fouling must be highly non-linear else the internet would be flooded with reports about JASO FC oil causing power loss and injector failures (rather than the improved running that is commonly, although anecdotally, reported).

The HFRR test results for "Refinery Diesel" appears to totally contradict the Spicer report from 2007 which makes me wonder about the 2 stroke oil that was used.

                      • I am a happy owner of a 12mth old triton 4x4 2.5TD. From new the engine was very noisy, even tho a truck still worse than many. From about 3k I started using Castrol Activ 2T at the rate of 150ml per 70lt fill. The results now at 25k are quite amazing as it runs much quieter both at idle with a lot less clatter and throughout the rev range with and without towing. Still drives like a truck but much better especially over long drives where a few less db are appreciated. Can't really comment on improvement in economy as it was barely run in when 2T treatment began. Most fills get the 2T treatment but the odd one gets missed due to bottle being used may have not been topped up in a while, simply 2T next week. By the way no brand loyalty as I fill up with cheapest diesel I find at the time, also no difference in drivability or km per tank at all. BTW 10 lt per 100 km is the norm. Just thought I would share as lots here are in early stages of trials with this stuff. No scientific testing just real life testing where I pay all my own bills, so if I wasn't convinced I would jump off the 2T ship pretty quick.

                        Cheers- Jman

                        • Thanks for your feedback. I also had the Triton 2.5TD, the same engine as yours but the base model without the larger VV turbo.
Mine was in the ML single cab GLX with rwd. Same as you I started adding 2T but at 350ml the first time for the 70L tank and at 1:200 after that. The result was also amazing, I could hear other engines running at traffic lights with mine purring by comparison.
When I increased the fuel and boost on a dyno getting another 30% power and 40% torque, it was still super quiet compared to the way it ran without 2T. I did install a blanking plate to cancel the EGR with good results too, no codes at all from that.
Fuel consumption was rated at 8.2L/100km and I averaged 8.1L/100km by calc at the pump over the 50,000km that I had it.

Still miss it! One of my all time favourites and so very useful.

I use the Flash Lube bottles to administer the 2 SO. Only weakness is the cap, which can crack if screwed down to hard. It has 50ml graduations on the side to make it easy to put the right amount in. I use 150mls each time for the 55 litre tank.

The BlueMotion has 32,000Kms on it now, all with 2 SO, no problems.

                            • Well I finally got around to ringing the dealership that I bought my Yeti from to discuss how to avoid a HPFP issue arising.
He said, predictably, don't use ANY additive (voiding warranty etc).....use a big brand fuel, and, interestingly DON'T fill more than you need if the vehicle is going to be used only say once a month.
On that basis you would be low on fuel a lot of the time but it would be fresher. (? condensation in an almost empty tank?)
                              FWIW.
