Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

If you could keep all the chat and banter in General Chat, where it eventually expires, that would assist in keeping the forum informative and our bandwidth down.
My response to the original poster is that it could be an EGR valve issue. I have seen a few G5s with this problem, usuallly with more ks, but who knows.
Get the car scanned and see if you have any air intake, throttle body, or egr cades.

This happened to me this morning (Mon). Golf has done 25k and always starts 1st time till today. Last drove it Fri to work & back (50km). It took about 5 or 7 goes of turning the engine over for ~20 secs before it started very roughly
(after re-reading this thread !). Holding the rpms to about 2k for a little while helped to settle it down. It blew a lot of smoke when 1st started. Drove off ok but still a bit rough sounding for the next few minutes. For a while thought I would have to call vw service, glad it finally started but still a scary episode for what has been a very reliable car. Drove home from work & then went food shopping, both times started 1st go. Checked it with vagcom and no faults found. Battery seemed fine, so im guessing it could be the fuel jelling as it was pretty cold (for Sydney) over the weekend or maybe water in the fuel tank ?
Unless it happens again tmw, Im not sure taking it to a dealer (under warranty) will achieve much.MY08 2.0L TDI DSG
